Zicos Brazilian Restaurant Edinburgh 12/12/2014Food club was back in the capital this month looking for a festive delight, and on a cold wintery Decembers night the venue of choice was Zicos Brazilian Bar and Grill. As is the norm a short train journey into town, and a mere 5 minute walk from the station we found ourselves on the door step welcomed by staff and the aroma of copious amounts of meat over the open flames, a sight to behold in itself. A couple members short this month, one in particular is a story for another day, yet we were not deterred as we entered eagerly salivating at the thought of what lay ahead. We were shown to our table and seated comfortably in the spacious restaurant floor, and immediately ordered a round of drinks. Brahma and Efes were the beer of choice for most and a mojito for one particularly fruity member. Everyone was in the Christmas spirit and a fine selection of Christmas crackers were laid out on the table. Firmly pulled, and hats placed on our heads we were able to sit back and relax and simply wait for the food to arrive. No messing around with menus, and life altering decisions about which starter or main to have, the only decision to be made was is there room for the next piece of meat? (Yes, always yes)A salad bar was on offer for a pre-meal warm up and as an accompaniment to the abundance of meats. This allowed the taste buds a welcomed break of refreshment in between each round. A little short in variety, although fresh and tasty a choice of mixed greens, tomato, cucumber, peppers and pickles were served up alongside some cold pastas and bean stew which all offered something different to the meal.Back to our seats and promptly the meat started to flow from the kitchen. Arriving on large skewers freshly pierced from the kitchen, we were served up course after course of well-cooked and delicious food. We tried to tally each round but ultimately lost count after around 12. The pork sausages were sumptuous, the Prime Rib was as soft and tender as butter, and chicken legs cooked to perfection. Three different cuts of beef on offer topside, silverside and rump steak all prepared perfectly. These meats all were cooked to around medium temperature which is perfect for us food clubbers, some may find it a little less than they normally like. The Pork loin and Parmesan crusted pork loin were a delight, cooked over a grill can be easily overdone and dry, but these were executed perfectly. One particular member enjoyed the lamb so much they had 3 offerings of it even after all the other meats. Beautifully pink and tender gammon was carved carefully before some Chorizo sausages added a little spice to the night and combined with the other meats were spectacular. A little delicacy of chicken hearts was also on offer throughout the meal. A nice touch and of course every member had to try at least once. Not for the feint hearted (no pun intended) this was actually quite delicious similar to the taste of chicken livers. Roasted pineapple dusted with cinnamon was also served up as a pallet refresher during the meal which only added to the taste sensation. As the never ending supply of meats started to take its toll and the sweat firmly running down our heads we decided to call it a night on the savory side of dinner, our stomachs bursting at the seams, but there is always room for dessertAlthough the selection of desserts was a little underwhelming, especially as they were out of the passion fruit mousse, this is probably a conscious decision by the restaurant. After the amount of meat supplied, only the elite food go-oers will be able to stomach a dessert. This was proven no more so than the weaker members of Food Club deciding against dessert. The brave souls who ventured onward were offered a choice of chocolate pave or Brazilian style flan. Most opted for the Pave and one went for the Flan. The Pave was more of an ice cream Sunday than a traditional Pave but it was enjoyed all the same, cold and sweet to cut through the richness of all the meat. The flan was deliciously light and bouncy exactly as a Flan should be and was thoroughly enjoyed.A Few more drinks were had and with that the meal was over. Food Club headed off happy and satisfied after another excellent experience and another of Edinburghs delights sampled. From all at Food Club, we wish you a happy new year and best wishes for 2015.

Used a groupon deal for 2 people for 20 when I ate here and thought it was delicious. Tried lots of different food and found the chicken hearts surprisingly nice! Found the drinks quite expensive, can of Irn was around 2 I think

If you’re a carnivore at heart, you will be very impressed, I’m sure, with what Zico’s has to offer. I’d never been to a churrascaria (aka a BBQ meat restaurant) before. This is normally done rodzio (buffet) style where waiting staff (or passadores) bring various meat offerings on skewers to your table and you can either say a hearty ‘Yes, please!’ or a groaning ‘No, thank you, that was lovely, but….(insert reason here)’.Zico’s occasionally offers discounted vouchers on Groupon for you to sample their menu at half price and that’s exactly what we did with a couple of friends. Despite reading some reviews about the lack of lavish decor, the meat served more than makes you forget about what other reviewers said. I was thoroughly impressed by their selection of beef, sausages, chicken, ham and pork. They do bring you each selection quite quickly, so make sure you either eat quickly so you can sample the next dish, or simply flip over your green card to the red side so you can take a rest. When you’re ready for more, just flip it back to the green side and the waiting staff will continue to serve you with more meaty goodness! It’s an all you can eat meat buffet and you can also help yourself to copious amounts of rice, beef fried rice or salads to accompany your meat. I would also recommend trying the Guarana Antartica soft drink, a popular alternative to Coca Cola in Brazil. Live a little on the wild side, I promise you’ll enjoy it if you like your fruity fizzy juices! diyshopaholic.com
