Hit and miss, but decent. Grade: C+/B-When Howie’s is on target, they’re on. But when they’re off, they’re definitely off. With the presentation of my appetizer, wood pigeon breast and black pudding, I was impressed. Both of these earthy flavo(u)rs were balanced exquisitely by an acidic salad. It was well-conceived and very well executed. Other dishes, such as the duck breast, hit the mark as well. Some other dishes didn’t fare so well. One of our group got the burger, which was topped by either a tomato or onion chutney. Unfortunately, the condiment overpowered the meat and he couldn’t finish the meal. The sea bass that I ordered was a new addition and it was clumsy in design and didn’t consider the interaction of tastes. Pickled peppers in an overly-intense vinegar topped the fish and beat it senseless. The plate was based with pesto, but it was then layered with a chunky potato salad featuring an overwhelming amount of mayo. The fish was completely lost in the two oil-based sauces and the peppers (fortunately, it seemed as if they listened to my feedback and a correction could have been instituted). Now, the redemption: sticky toffee pudding. This was fabulous. I don’t live for dessert, but this cake with rich, warm toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream was addictive.Howie’s has a pleasant atmosphere and the ownership seems to care very much about the product they deliver. I’d give them another chance.
