First time at chop chop last night, and what an experience! My friend had been before and had recommended the unlimited banquet….and seeing as unlimited is one of my favourite words, why would I refuse?! The banquet consists of cucumber salad, two types of dumplings, chicken wings, fried potato, marinated aubergine, Northern beef and rice. That was your first round! Each element was delicious, especially the dumplings and wings! My only criticism would be that things do get cold because there is so much in front of you. Round two was more dumplings and wings. Service was great, even when a big group came in. Looking forward to my next trip!
Ok, I’m impressed. And being Asian myself, I’m quite critical of Asian restaurants and their authenticity. Had their well-known dumplings (is the reason why I came anyway) and noodles. If you’re not aware, there’s an art to dumplings. It’s not just the taste. It’s the texture of the pastry, the thickness, etc. Same as noodles actually…there is a whole art to good homemade noodles actually. And most importantly, as my husband pointed out, the food isn’t greasy at all (and if you’re familiar with Chinese restaurants in the UK, you know it’s hard to find a non-greasy place). So my recommendation on dumplings? I recommend the pork and chive boiled dumplings. It’s the most traditional. And do remember to eat it immediately as soon as it comes out of the kitchen, if not it can get a bit starchy when it gets cold.
i am a Chinese and i went to this restaurant. But what frustrating me is the dumplings are not totally Chinese taste or shape at all..Other food are terrible.I heard the cook is an Indian so i didnt enjoy it much If you a Chinese,i think you won’t be here anymore!
I go there almost once every month for lunch – very close to office. Also they offer good price on ‘business lunch menu’!Authentic Chinese feeling (authenticity confirmed by a Chinese colleague!) with bright red and yellow dcor… service is good, reasonably fast and at least half of the staff are Chinese – which adds to the ambience! Staff encourages you to try chopsticks but aren’t too fussy about it.Best and most popularitem on their menuisbeef dumplings (I go for chicken dumplings as I don’t like beef but that’s just me). Chinese Tsingtao beer goes well with their food. And when the menu says ‘hot’ (image of chilly) it is really hot even by Indian standards. And finally the best feature of this restaurant – puzzles & interesting facts about China and Chinese languageon the table napkins.Good place to visit – wouldn’t go their fora firstdate or anniversarymeal but definitely for a relaxed/fun lunch outing.
I cannot for the life of me understand how this place managed to make it into some sort of high quality restaurant competition or receive any positive reviews unless the business has done a complete 180 in an incredibly short space of time. Went to the Haymarket branch on first arriving in Edinburgh with my flatmates looking to fill my dumpling cravings. One of them bailed shortly after arriving and I wish I’d done the same; what we saw of the dumplings were average quality, once they had actually made it to the table. The table itself was quite sticky when we had sat down and had to wait a while for someone to come and wipe it down. None of what we ordered was correct in either the contents or portions… and we only ordered dumplings! Charging nearly double for fried dumplings over boiled/steamed was a rip off, especially considering only one side was fried. It seems we were not the only customers who were left unsatisfied; a couple who were dining nearby were trying to patiently query their order with a staff member who appeared visibly frustrated. After being at the restaurant for an hour and a half and waiting half that to get our first batch of dumplings on a very quiet night, we decided to leave. We still did not receive our fourth batch of dumplings and upon mentioning this to who I can only assume was the manager, offered us a small discount to compensate and mentioned that the staff were new and training. I have no issue with this as you have to learn on the job though unless they have an incredibly high staff turnover rate (which I can definitely understand!) I feel as if that is a line used to excuse bad service as it seems a lot of reviews have noted new staff. The staff we did query when waiting for our food (save one lady who was extremely apologetic and proactive in trying to assist us, though with no apparent help from her colleagues) were indifferent and unhelpful, one even shrugging when asked about the mix up with orders. Left feeling very hungry and as if we had wasted our time. Had sworn not to go back until I noticed there was a Leith branch – opted for a take-out delivery order instead. Again, ordered dumplings. This time the order was correct, though cold. Which considering it took two hours to arrive (we were advised 45 minutes) and two phone calls back to the restaurant to chase makes complete sense. In short, this place is a waste of time and money. It is most certainly not quality Chinese food, despite the claims. I would strongly advise to look elsewhere for quality Chinese cuisine because you are most certainly not going to find it here!
Real northern chinese home cooking at its absolute best! I’ve visited China on several occasions and eaten in all sorts of places and the cuisine in ChopChop brought back very happy memories. Apart from the dumplings, which are truly authentic, try the aubergine, dofu, and green bean dishes!
Service was appauling. The dumplings we ordered took forever, there was no service to speak of. I felt insulted by the fact that I have to pay a service charge for a nonexistant service. Won’t be returning ever again.
