I’ve been working in Edinburgh for most of this week and while the weather has taken a turn for the downright cold, my colleague and I have been looking for uplifting dine-out options. Luck had us on West Maitland St as the drizzle drizzled and the fog froze. Not feeling in the mood for curry or Chinese, of which there seemed to be plenty, we thought Italian might give a warm respite from the Caledonian autumn. Gali’s menu is better than its frontage – it’s extensive, classy, and none too cheap (but none too expensive either). There’s plenty of pizza but for antipasti, pasta, pesce and carne you’re sorted too. I had bruschetta to start, with mushrooms, which was pretty ordinary but that’s not to say it wasn’t enjoyable. My main was really very good, though – bistecca, or sirloin steak, topped with artichoke in a white wine sauce with roast potatoes and nuts. If anything the chef had got marginally too excited when salting the steak, but otherwise it was something I could eat every night until I died of heart failure at the age of 36. I had a glass of house red, too, which wasn’t actually listed with a name. It was from Verona, according to the menu, and very acidic but that didn’t stop me drinking it in good time. In modestly impressive fashion, there was one waiter serving at least half a dozen tables; while I admired his calmness in dealing with those covers on his own it did require us to make exertions to catch his eye from time to time whenever service was required. He was friendly and welcoming, but it wasn’t the most attended-to I’ve felt as a customer. For all this, my first taste of genuine Italian grub in Edinburgh was very good; my first experience was just a little less impressive.
