My first impression is, this is a michelin star restaurant. It gave that kind of aura. From the offset, the menu was familiar with the likes of other MS restaurants, tasting sets. Maybe this is and i just didn’t know about it. One thing sets it aside, the price. I’ll come here any day over the likes of kitchen, 21212 or castle. So i ordered the scallops and then the lamb as my main. As with all French, they like to make you wait. So some bread to start with two types of butter, one with seaweed and another which was orange and didn’t quite hear what it was. Then i am served some puree that was a bit like tomato… The scallops was perfectly cook with the starter containing ice cream. First time to have ice cream to start and it was just so prefect. After another wait my lamb was served in a array of greens. Again everything just matched with the flavours. Taken a back as i was i decided to order dessert even though i was full. I wasn’t disappointed. The chocolate mousse, ice cream, tangy cherries… Can’t wait to go back. I ordered

The Atelier is warm, welcoming and cosy. The waitress who welcomed us felt like an old dear friend and she guided us into the dining area and made sure we did not trip over the small step.Once seated she served us an amuse bouche of butternut squash soup with truffle and truffle oil. It looked really impressive and I like when you receive a little something at the start of your meal. The soup was amazing, but I personally could have done without the oil. It was all in such a small cup it got a bit too concentrated with all that truffle flavor and the truffle pieces tended to stick in my teeth. As a main I had risotto with a saffron creme. The addition of figs were nice but not a must at all. I could’ve done without and if you’re not a saffron lover this is not a dish for you because this dish was singing saffron left to right. But now for the best and most important part,,,,Dessert! 🙂 All of them were original, a bit quirky and I definitely felt clueless about what would appear on the table. The only thing I was sure of was that I would have a licorice flavored macaroon with figs and some touch somewhere of coffee, ricotta and marshmallow. And what came? I giant macaroon! I’m not so sure about the figs (this place seemed to love them) and the ricotta or where this coffee was but the marshmallow was gorgeous…And the macaroon. It tasted amazing, but I would have preferred the chef to be more daring with the licorice flavor.Overall, the atmosphere, service and food was amazing. The Atelier is definitely the place for a date night with its intimate and cozy atmosphere. The people working there are wonderful and very attentive. I’m leaving them with one piece of advice, sometimes simpler is better and try not to include fig in every course (or maybe it was a theme I missed). If you go order the giant macaroon you won’t regret it. treatsandtwists.com

The weekday lunch menu was 12 for two courses or 15 for three, which seemed an excellent value for the quality of food. You have three choices for each course. The mains included a meat, a fish, and a vegetarian dish. Before our first course the waitress delivered a carafe of ice water (yay, no need to ask for refills) and two slices of warm, crusty bread with a tasty pesto dipping sauce. The pacing of the meal was a little on the slow side for a lunch. It was fine for us because we were not in a hurry on this particular afternoon, but for folks on a limited lunch break, this might be a problem. My lentil, spinach, and chick pea curry was enjoyable as a main. I followed this with the cheese plate, which was nice except for the fact that the cheeses were served at refrigerator temperature. zurika.com

Freshly opened where Umair used to trade, The Atelier seeks to showcase local produce in fresh and exciting combinations, from sleekly refurbished premises on Morrison Street.Decor is minimalist, with sparse greyness dominant. Its really quite stylish, though newness makes it feel slightly stark, but this will improve once the place is better worn in.The menu gave me considerable pause for thought. Not only did dishes read impressively, they presented a range of possible routes to success. Did I opt for seafood, something more hearty, or did I slavishly stick to Augusts current veggie plan? I opted for traditional soup, which today was cauliflower, followed by a fabulous sounding venison main course.Service was friendly and efficient throughout, with plenty of good banter at all the right points. My cauliflower soup soon arrived. It looked rather bonnie, with its little topping of baby florets and olive oil drops. It proved to be outstandingly good, with a warm roasted earthiness to the spicing, which made for highly enjoyable spoonfuls. It takes its rightful place alongside the Soupquest exceptionals. The main course was very good, too. A hearty portion, it comprised two venison elements: slices of haunch; and a little chocolatey hotpot. With greens, mash, and wonderful vanilla carrot puree all set in a rich, sticky gin and beetroot jus, it was a really smartly executed dish. The place has some of the usual new restaurant kinks to iron out. Theyre aiming squarely at casual fine dining, which something that takes a little while to perfect, but they start their journey from a really strong starting point.Overall, The Atelier is a really promising new addition to our Edinburgh restaurant tapestry. The quality of their dishes is very high, and all the other elements for success are in place. The location could be the only weakness, as other places have struggled to establish themselves in this neighbourhood, but their offering is compelling enough to demand a dedicated visit. Youll be as impressed as I was by this elegant, welcoming place.ScoresBlythe scores The Atelier4.5/5 for food4/5 for presentation4/5 for setting4/5 for servicegiving an overall 16.5/20Todays quester was: BlytheI ate: cauliflower soup; venisonI drank: Sicilian red, water, espressoI wore: classic stripesTotal bill: 26.70 lunchquest.co.uk

Atelier means studio or workshop in French, and that’s what’s needed. A workshop on the menu. Service was stuffy and dry.
