Luxurious, fancy and classy like no other place in town, The Pompadour is ideal for a special dinner with… well, someone especial. We had their their seasonal menu and all dishes were incredibly cooked, tasty, delicious. Loved every bit of our dinner there… Save some space for desserts, they are worth it! madaboutravel.com
The Pompadour promises and delivers. The menu and wines perfectly balanced. Service professional. I hope the pictures speak for themselves.I would not have mind if there would have been a bit more time between courses- for example: we were served the first course when we hadn’t finished our ( beautifully crafted cocktails) aperitifs yet but when we asked for more time, they tried to accommodate. After all, whether you perceive it as efficient or hurried, relaxed or too slow, is personal. The table we had originally, I feel should not be used. Right in front of the kitchen, staff continuously walk around your table- is quite distracting. We were moved elsewhere when we requested this and that really made a difference to our experience. What we noticed was that all the wines with the menu were poured elsewhere so you don’t see the labels of the wine, neither do they top you up here or there. We were surprised that they did not serve an amuse but some olives instead. Highlights were: the candies walnuts, truffled risotto, truffled brie (perhaps it shows that I like truffle 🙂 ) and pigeon. The rose water in the savoury Harissa sauce was sublime. They also do a 2/3 course set menu and I am looking forward to try that too sometime. If you are looking for something special, the Pompadour is a very good option. You won’t regret it.
What a fine meal should be. Grade: AEven though a hotel restaurant, and one now in the midst of renovation, Pompadour should not be missed. Every one of the dishes we had at Pompadour demonstrated the exceptional skills of the chef and kitchen staff. Each dish was beautifully presented. Fresh ingredients and the knowledge of how to marry, develop, and present flavo(u)rs came across with confidence.A Scottish classic, cock-a-leekie soup, softly paired chicken stock and leeks, and the woodland mushroom and chestnut soup with herb soured cream was rich and earthy. A generous portion of chicken liver and foie gras parfait terrine was smooth and creamy and paired nicely with the with spiced pear chutney. Two of us enjoyed the Scottish salmon, lemon crushed new potatoes, glazed carrots, and watercress veloute. This baked salmon was the best I had in the UK. The other two in our party were impressed by the braised ox cheek, curly kale, oxtail bonbon, and roasted cep mushroom and shallot puree. Its rich beef taste was satisfying without being heavy. The desserts, including the cinnamon and pear parfait with caramelized pear, were exquisite, and my after dinner coffee was the best cup I had in memory.I love this hotel, which is in the process of converting to Hilton’s Waldorf Astoria brand, and I love it even more because of the restaurant. Now comes the challenge of plotting a reason to have to go back to Edinburgh so that I can eat at Pompadour again.
Edinburgh’s Best Kept Secret!. Having lived in Edinburgh for 4 years, I had no idea this restaurant existed. Had the ‘Taste of Scotland’ menu, amazing up there with some of the best meals I have ever eaten! The views of the Castle were the best I’ve seen, I couldn’t help but take a photo. I really recommend it. Its not super cheap (about 60 odd per person) but it was pure indulgence and I will be back!
