Excellent! If you are in War Eagle Country, this is the place. I have heard so much about Acre from friends and have wanted to try it for some time. This week while visiting Auburn, we got our chance. Wetried to get a reservation but were told when we called that they had plenty of tables and were not taking reservations. When we arrived 20 minutes later, all the tables were filled. Luckily, we scored the last outdoor table available without an hour wait. The al fresco dining experience was quite nice. Our server was courteous, attentive and very engaging. She also was most knowledgeable about both the food and the wine. We started off with the goat cheese guacamole. This stuff is amazing. Why haven’t I thought of this before? The flavors are so good together. I may be ruined for regular guacamole. And the crispy paprika chips that come along side are quite good all on their own. For our dinners, we opted for fried green tomatoes with crab and the grilled snapper. Most people do not know how to fry green tomatoes properly. The tomatoes should be tart, crisp, crunchy and not greasy. These were fried to perfection. The crab topping and creole sauce was great. I did find the pimento cheese which is placed underneath to be just a bit spicy, but overall still very tasty. A great dish with unique flavors. I also was able to get a side dish of crab potato salad. Sheer heaven. They do not have it every night. It is available some evenings with the specials. It’s a wonderful blend of Southern potato salad mixed generously with crab. It could use a touch more mayo, but it’s very, very good and not something you will find on a run of the mill menu. The snapper was cooked nicely. If ordering again, I would ask for mine to be cooked light — undercooked to their standards. It comes with an amazing popcorn sauce that is made from fresh cream corn. It is excellent with the fish and has a wonderful corn flavor. The collard spaetzle is also quite good, combining noodles and collards for a great, creative side dish. We found the cocktails to be very good, too. We tried their versions of the mint julep and Moscow mule and had some wonderful Pinot Grigio with our dinners. Parking here is limited on busy evenings as are the sought after tables. The food is pricey, especially at dinner. The portions are not especially large but the food quality is very high.
