The food was really good. It tasted home made. I had meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and cabbage. The sauce on the meatloaf was too sweet for what I like, but it was good. The sweet tea wasn’t good.
Excellent! Great food, good value.Had blue plate special. Actually on a blue plate! Quick service. Will be back soon with Dad and Mary.
This is one of the best soul-food restaurants in the city. The food is always good, there are a plethora of choices (even if you don’t like heavy food) and the prices are very reasonable. It’s a quaint restaurant that almost feels upscale, without the sophisticated prices.
I took my mother to lunch here 2 weeks ago on a Saturday, the Hwy 31 location in Riverchase. She has been here several times before with my sister in-law and was telling me how good it was. Well, not so much on this day. They were not overly crowded for a late lunch, we arrived at about 1:00. We were seated in a comfortable booth, I was impressed with real cloth napkins for a change. I asked our server if their water was filtered as I do not drink tap. She said it was so we both went with water and a slice of lemon. I wasn’t trying to go cheap, this is what I drink at nearly all restaurants. The water may have been filtered however it had a strong musty dank taste that was unacceptable. I cook with and drink only Brita water at home and I know that filtered water should really have no taste at all. Our server wanted to argue with me about it, but instead of suggesting a bottled water she just walked off. I wanted to eat something I would not cook at home, and I do cook a lot. I ordered the chicken livers, grilled summer vegetables, and fried green tomatoes. My mom ordered just a vegetable plate since I was going to share some livers with her. She got the squash casserole, mac n cheese, and turnip greens. They were pretty small portions in my thinking. She gave me a taste of the squash and of the mac n cheese, both were very bland and just sort of OK….not what I would cook. The chicken livers and green tomatoes were way overcooked to an unsavory dark brown, both dry and hardly with any taste except the burned coating. The grilled vegetables were the highlight of my meal even though a bit greasy from too much oil on the flattop. My mother also had a green tomato and concurred that both were burned. Normally I would take the leftovers in a go box, no need this time. I was very disappointed in the whole experience, doubt seriously if I will return. I guess they deserve another chance, but my taste buds say please go somewhere else.
Great food/friendly service. I don’t know how your mom slipped at Dale’s Vestavia this month because I use to dine there all the time and they have been closed for almost 6 years. I now eat at the Hoover location. Love the food and such a wide range to satisfy all tastes. Staff is always friendly and they seem to have many repeat customers because I notice guests being called by name.

Best dining experience ever!!. I took my mom and dad here for dinner and was surprised how reasonable the prices are. The food and service was great. The server took the time to answer some questions about the new menu and was very patient with my parents. I will be back with or without my folks!
