We wanted an hibachi meal for our anniversary lunch. We had heard some great things about this place so we decided to give a try. We had the best server, although I can’t remember his name, a tall, slender young man with longish hair. He was quick with our orders and had the Hibachi Chef cooking soon after we put in our orders. Our soup was lukewarm but we decided since we were their first customers of the day, this was to be expected. Our salad and dressing were very tasty. We had both chosen, steak and scallops and chicken and shrimp, thus by splitting all four of these, we were very satisfied with our meal. The stir fried vegetables and rice were great and I noticed one of the people at the table substituted double rice instead of vegetables. We are looking on coming back in the future based on most of our meal with such an excellent Chef and Server.

The ginger salad dressing was kind of bitter, the onion soup was delicious. It had more to it then other Japanese restaurant’s onion soup. The super crunch role was fabulous. My favorite role is usually the tiger roll but it slacked in flavor today. The shrimp and fried rice were really good, but the vegetables were more on the burned side. Over all it was a good satisfying meal that I will have again. Oh I was very pleased with the amount of sauces they included. They gave me two of every sauce.
Unbelievably good!. Our family goes to Sumo for almost every special event. It is consistently good, and the staff recognizes us and are always extremely pleasant. We love both sushi and the grill, and never have anything but delicious and appetizing dinners!! 8 of us attended last night for a special meal, and even though the majority of us only wanted sushi, there was no hesitation in seating us where we preferred, at the grill table. Everything was plentiful and delicious, and our chef delighted our boys with his shrimp throws and table tricks. I think the food gets better every time we go back!! Love Sumo and their crew!!
Take out order from Sumo’s. Food is typically good, but rudeness of an obviously inexperienced hostess at noon on Monday, December 15th in placing a take out order was inexcusable!

Pleasantly enjoyable experience, despite the reviews…. Our family of five had dinner there last night (a Thursday night) and it was really good. Our chef really catered to our young boys and made it really memorable for them. The food was great. My husband’s steak was cooked to a perfect medium-rare and my scallops were perfectly done. The chef even asked the server for more scallops because he felt the kitchen shorted the order by a few. Needless to say I was thinking the same thing, and was delightfully pleased when he consciously had the customer in mind and supplemented the order. Not that we needed the food, they provide every order with soup, salad, vegetables, rice, noodles, shrimp and your meat of choice. The children’s meals were just as big as the adults. I was expecting a half order, but they really kept piling it on. Our server was nice and attended to us well. She did not talk much, but our drinks remained full, she was attentive, and picked up our dishes in a timely manner when we were finished with them. Overall, it was a very pleasurable experience. The food was delicious, and the service was good. I was very skeptical to dine at this restaurant after all the bad reviews I read not only about Sumo, but about Stix and some of the other landmark Japanese Steakhouses native to B’ham. They all seemed to have the same issues, so I thought we would get the same treatment at any of them. Why not try this one? I am glad we did and we will be going back.
