Just Bad. I haven’t eaten anything from Backyard Cafe since a co-worker brought some of their chicken salad to work about 3 years ago. It was the worst chicken salad I’d ever had in my life – looked like dog food and had the texture of potted meat. You couldn’t even tell it was chicken. So I figured any place serving something like that could definitely not get anything else right, so why patronize? Fast forward to this past Friday night, and I find out that they are catering a mardi gras ball I’m attending. I jokingly warned my date that the food was probably not gonna be good. And it wasn’t. They served beef roast that was a bit tasty but terribly dry, and the carvers were cutting with the grain instead of against it, so we ended up with strings of meat on our plates. The shrimp and grits – just plain disaster. What caterer in the South can’t do a proper shrimp and grits? The grits were lumpy and dry, and they’d deep fried the shrimp and mixed them in with the grits. You would think the breading on the shrimp would’ve gone soggy, right? Nope, almost as hard as rocks. There was some kind of red potato dish and some sauced wingettes that were just ok. And all of the food was room temperature which didn’t help at all. The food served at the ball didn’t change my opinion of Backyard Cafe. It seems like they would’ve put more effort into the quality, considering that they were serving to 200 potential customers.
We’ll be back!. I got fried chicken, potatoes, candied yams, collards, & cornbread. The food was excellent, the people are very nice, & the prices are good, too. All the food (including fried fish) in their buffet looked delicious. The restaurant has a pleasant, small-town cafe atmosphere. My husband & I will be back!
Lunch with Trent today. Took my 94 year old neighbor to Cardiology Associates today for a follow up after he was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure. On the way back, he said I could pick where I wanted to go to lunch. Since his sitter Emma had never been to Backyard Cafe, i thought I’d show them what real home cooked soul food was! She loved it, but Trent was the one who loved it the most. Those ribs were all he could think about! We’ll be back, that’s for sure!
The real thing. Satisfying soul food and pleasant service at a reasonable price.
