Fantastic!!! I’ve always enjoyed Wintzell’s oysters. This I believe is the original location. I was here about 20 years ago because it was going to close and I wanted to get some oysters before it closed forever. Than some smart business men jumped in and saved Wintzell’s!! There are several locations, but the original is the best!

A bit of a Mobile institution, Wintzell’s has been around a long time. If you enjoy oysters, you’ll be a happy camper. They have a good variety of other dishes as well. The original restaurant on Dauphin Street has the most character……always crowded on weekends or if there is an event downtown. Walking distance to many night spots.

Food was very good, but the service was terrible! The server was poorly trained. She asked what we wanted to drink, and we ordered water. She said that she would get it immediagtely. The water never came. She came back twice to tell her that our food would be ready shortly. Second time, I asked where our water was, and she looked surprised…..This server had no more than two other tables to serve.

The reviews are right. Great oysters. I had the sampler and chose from 8 types. 4 each of 4 kinds. Yum. Hubby had half n half. Half plate each fried oysters and shrimp. Great coleslaw and onion rings. No room for dessert but it looked great. Attentive service. Everyone friendly even if not working your table. Water glasses never empty. Clean place. Walls covered with hilarious quotes. Best was free meal offer for an 80 year old accompanied by parent. Go there too and enjoy.

Started at Wintzell’s with a cup of the seafood gumbo and, I must admit, it was very tasty. It was served with toasted bread that accompanied it very well. The very dark – nearly black – roux of the gumbo was excellent and full of shrimp and oysters. I even got the bonus bay leaf that (hopefully) shows this didn’t come out of a can. As for the main course, I chose the broiled platter, with which I do have a few comments/concerns. First, there was no drawn butter. How do you serve a broiled seafood platter (shrimp, scallops, fish and oysters) without drawn butter? I received a bowl of liquid margarine instead. Totally unacceptable… Second, my server waved me off the cole slaw pretty strongly for some reason, so I opted for fried okra and cheese grits. The cheese grits were unremarkable, almost as if they had come from a box. The fried okra was decent but obviously not homemade. Finally, the platter was way overdone. The shrimp and scallops were chewy, indicative that they were terribly overcooked. Overall, the platter was unimpressive. In total, my experience at Wintzell’s was underwhelming and I doubt I will return. My server was excellent but, if in Mobile, Felix’s is a much better option.

My fried shrimp fix. I was only in mobile for one evening. I asked numerous people where was the one place downtown I needed to eat before I went back to Texas. Several people suggested Wintzell’s. I am so glad I listened. It was a pretty good hike from the Hampton Inn Downtown but well worth it. I ordered the half and half with fried shrimp and fried oysters. They arrived steaming hot and crisply fried, just the way they should be. The dish came with 6 shrimp and six fried oysters. I ordered cheesy grits and steamed broccoli on the side. The cheesy grits were good, although a bit runny. The broccoli was overcooked to my taste. The meal also came with two hush puppies which I did not try. They have a nice assortment of beers on tap and bottled beers. I opted for a local Alabama pale ale, and was not disappointed.Service was a little disappointing. Most of the wait staff seemed to hustle, but not my particular server. The decor is fun. The walls are loaded top to bottom with all kinds of hilarious quotes. It feels very family oriented. You could go in almost any attire, I believe, and it would be appropriate.I will definitely go again, if I am staying in downtown Mobile.
