The fried avocado and warm bacon salad is so great. Little heavy for a starter, but delish. The steak frites are a personal favorite. Love the atmosphere and decor. Servers are great.
Sunday Brunch. As world travelers, we have dined at some of the finest restaurants. There were 5 of us having brunch upstairs at Avo. They told us that our table was ready but there were only 4 place settings. Although we mentioned this to the waiter we had to bring this up again after the food arrived. We ordered the French press coffee. When it was finally brewed and poured our cups where full of coffee grinds. The waiter apologized and brought another pot. The sweetener that was requested with the 1st pot of coffee still had not arrived after the 2nd pot was served. One of us ordered the jalapeo hash browns and they were served without the jalapeo. The Embarcadero Benedict was delicious but it was difficult to tell if it had any prosciutto. The hamburger that was ordered medium rare came well done and totally raw on the second try. When they offered to recook it more, we agreed but never got it back. The french fries were luke warm at best and closer to cold. On second try the fries were burnt. After my husband asked for more water we watched the waiter pour water at other tables but never replenished ours. The surly manager responded like it was our fault that the food and service were so poor. Two out of 5 in our party had no complaints ( they did not order coffee). I need to point out that this restaurant serves a high end brunch and its prices are indicative of this. You should expect quality food to be prepared and served at a higher standard.
Terrace treehouse. Avo has an incredible atmosphere, modern and accessible without being snobby. Green and eco friendly, I love the lighting and the roof on the open terrace/balcony. You overlook the avenue and square, very elegant and modern European design in the functionalty of the space. Menu, I’ve had many of the dishes and they are clean and decisive in flavors. Most of the choices are from great ingrediants. The chefs know how to keep you nourished and interested in the dishes offered. I love bison, they have ribeye, how many places in town have bison ? I like quail, they have quail! I like perfect onions when I choose a fried onion, they have adorable little onion petals with various dipping choices. I like whiskey, they have lots of whiskey and the bacon whiskey, well it’s bacon and whiskey, how is that not good? I like foie gras (sometimes, when made properly at least) they have tiny little sliders with foie melted on top!!!!! I like mushrooms, they have mushroom flatbread. Ice cream? Made in house with bourbon, again, ice cream with bourbon how can that not be good? I dislike pretension, I’ve been plenty of places with pretension and it is a flavor I cannot cleanse with a sorbet or pickled ginger, so I tend to choose a place to eat based on the way they treat the food and the people. Avo and the downstairs brother to this little treehouse balcony (which during the fall winter season at night it looks like a treehouse on the balcony! The lights from all the trees that are decorated for the square are just twinkles of delicate points and the air smells good not smoggy or congested) Dram, treat people well and with grace. The staff treat the guests to good food from good sources, pretension is not served, just a good shot of whiskey.
Don’t get the oysters!. I was so disappointed in the cornmeal breaded oysters. The oysters were tiny and without flavor, the cornmeal breading was thick and tasted like plain old cornbread. The proportions were 10% or less oyster, 90% or more tasteless cornmeal breading mix. There were four (for $11) and some dipping sauce that did not help the taste at all. What a disappointment. Ot
I’m surprised at the low percentage of people who liked this restaurant. I went with my parents last week and we liked it so much we went back for a second time in the same week! We tried a few appetizers, all of which were very good. I had the lamb chops both times and I have never had lamb previous to coming here. I have to say it was easily one of the best pieces of meat I have ever had. Cook perfectly both times. The risotto that went along with it was also amazing. We also had their filet and prime strip steak which were unbelievable also. To me it seems like either this place righted the ship from their start or you can never please some people. And I suspect the latter.
Superb Mint Julep. Don’t know why else you would go…yet, because that’s all I’ve had. And I know Juleps like I know Arrested Development.
