Very laid back and blas staff. The bread stuffs & bakery goods are really top quality. I like all of pastries and their breads are competitive with old stand-bys like Continental Bakery. I hope it does well in the UAB Southside area. I’ve never stopped in the a.m.–just lunch and late afternoon (their tea & coffee are both exceptionally good). Give them a try and you’ll be glad you did.
Birmingham Breadworks is known for selling their wonderful bread and pastries at their location in Southside and at the Pepper Place Farmers Market on Saturdays, but it’s also a great place for a light lunch. They offer lunch from 11-2. I would suggest trying their soup and one of their sandwiches. I tried their tomato soup and the Alabama Bird sandwich. Both were very good and tasted fresh.
The food was only so-so and the portions were very small for the price. Granted, it wasn’t expensive, but there just wasn’t a lot there. The soup only half-filled the bowl, and the pizza was seriously lacking in toppings. Now, if you want to talk a loaf of bread, this place is good, but that’s the only reason for coming here. The sour dough is great.
Best Bread, no contest!. I have loved their bread since they started selling it at Pepper Place Market. It’s so nice that they now have a real restaurant with so many delicious items and great atmosphere! I have eaten lunch there 3 times and will keep coming back! You can’t beat the soups, salads and sandwiches with fresh local veggies. Speaking of veggies, I was impressed that they always have plenty of menu items for vegetarians. The apple turnovers are also amazing!!!

Chocolate crossaint was good. Heated it up & it was yum. Nice evening snack. Fairly large just half and share.
Just meh. Stopped on my way to work at 7:55am, and the craisin bread I wanted to try was still in the oven. They did offer me a slice of the sourdough, which was good, but there just wasn’t much variety and no samples of anything else. The main disappointment is that they don’t have a day old rack like other bakeries so that you can try things out at a discount. Attractive spacious interior, though. I admit that maybe I’m more frugal than most, but a new establishment needs to offer samples and incentives. I think I’ll stick with Continental Bakery or Trattoria Centrale for a morning scone or biscuit because Breadworks doesn’t offer anything they don’t and far less variety, alas. Also, how about posting your daily specials and specialty breads on social media somewhere?
