First time I’ve been here in three or four years can’t remember. Knew we had to get there early in order to get a table Enjoyed good margaritas good guacamole ceviche and a great Mexican influenced dish…chicken Tinga I think Tinga is an Indian dish.Anyway, I had a companion never been there she really enjoyed it, really good service and great ambience. Get there early. I recommend highly.Visited again on March 23… had meatloaf… very tasty…great service from Jeffrey…this place is excellent.July 26…another great meal…great service…No wonder its always packed…
The line for this place is often really long, but that’s because it’s worth it! There are multiple things for vegans to eat, but I kept it simple, ordering the chips and salsa, and as an entree, the vegan tostada. The chips and salsa were pretty standard, a little too much cilantro for me (as most Mexican restaurants are), but the tostada (and the guacamole in particular) was AMAZING! I’d wait in a pretty long line for stuff this tasty! The restaurant itself has a really cool vibe, and it’s an especially great place to visit when you’re down on the North Side for an event like Art Crawl.
Went to this place last week. Enjoyed an omelette with toast at a reasonable price. This seems multi-dextrous in its menu offerings- part breakfast place, part fast food joint, part soul/southern food restaurant. I’ll stop by again to check out their lunch/dinner options.
Very nice Mexican cuisine..I kept it simple and had the grapefruit margarita and chicken tacos. The wait was an hour but went very fast sitting at the bar. Overall… The food was average.
I’d been to El Barrio years ago right after they first opened. I remember the food being ok, but when I heard about the lines out the door and the waits over an hour I thought it was crazy. I didn’t remember it being THAT good and made my opinion well known. Well, we got a gift certificate from family and decided to go back. We went at 6pm on a Saturday, and it was already busy. They already had a 30 min wait! However, the staff was super nice and on their game, and we were able to go get an awesome drink at Collins Bar while we waited.Margaritas? Excellent. Guac? Pretty good. Queso? Eh, ok. Nothing crazy special, but good. Same for chips. I got the carnitas tacos which were very, very good. Way better than I expected them to be. Way better than just about anywhere else in town (barring the taco truck and Gordos). However, they were totally out-shadowed by the Pepeto dish my husband ordered. Amazing chili lime broth with fall-apart smoked pork and fresh corn? Yes,please and thank you. We had to order some more of the corn tortillas to sop up all the broth, but it was something I would go back for in a heartbeat. I would gladly wait an hour for that food again. I am singing a different tune about this place now.
Wonderful in every way! Drinks are delicious! Food is delicious! Prices are great! Go EARLY! This was our second time to eat at El Barrio. We went in January for my birthday. It was seriously cold outside (30 degree temps). We arrived a few minutes before 5pm. The line had already started forming. The only downside (and this is the ONLY thing) to this place is that both doorways tend to stay open, allowing air to enter the restaurant, due to the line forming out onto the sidewalk.
Quite possibly the best guacamole we’ve ever had, and to think, we had it in Birmingham, Alabama! Funky, fresh atmosphere at this modern Mexican hotspot. We had the Pork Barbacoa (excellent) and the Grilled Chorizo Meatloaf (good). Good service.
