Enjoyed the people. I called to get directions and they were so inviting. Felt like I was in their home when we were there. This was obviously a local hangout and we had more fun watching everything going around than the eating 🙂 The food was like a diner and had some different sides than we were used to like salmon patties to go with you eggs etc. I couldn’t decide on the bacon or ham and Mr. Nelson solve my dilema….gave me both 🙂 It might not be a place for everybody but we like the local places and the charm it provides, even if the food isn’t what you might rate as 5star. We’d go back.
An urban experience. I was wandering aimlessly in downtown Birmingham looking for a place to get breakfast that wasn’t too far from my appointment. I saw some open parking spaces and a place called Nelson Brother’s cafe. I parked and walked up and peered in the windows–at first I noticed the bars on the windows, but hey, I’ve been in plenty of downtown areas where that’s just S.O.P. I wasn’t sure if it was just a carry out place, but then I could see some empty booths so I went on in. A nice, older gentleman at the counter, back bent from years of hard work, took my order with a smile and I went and grabbed a booth. I got a ham/egg/cheese sandwich and coffee and it was the real deal. Toast, scrambled eggs, country ham served like a sandwich and it was good. The coffee was strong and black. The more interesting side of the experience was that everyone there and everyone who came and went while I was there was African American. I don’t know if I was the only white guy in a suit who had ever camped out there, but I certainly felt like a novelty. In any event, everyone was as nice as could be. There was great soul and blues coming out of the juke box. It was clearly the kind of place where working folks go to start their day and they all seemed to know each other as regulars. I enjoyed getting to share that experience this morning.
