I love this place! Great size portions, seafood was fresh! Wide array on the menu. Service was really good, I could not have asked for anything better! I’m looking forward to our next visit!!

Just ate there for dinner. Sat at the bar as I was solo for the evening. Wasn’t given a drink menu when I sat down; then it took many minutes (with my menus stacked in front of me) before someone came to take my order. A couple minutes after taking my order, someone came back and said they were out of the special I ordered so I switched to something else from the specials menu. A few minutes after that, I was informed the Specials list was left from lunch – which I was told is because they change their specials by the fish coming in throughout the day – so they offered the corrected specials list. I changed to something they did have that I preferred to my second choice. Food was okay – grilled fish was overcooked by my liking but maybe I prefer my fish a little to the moist side and this was dry. I’m not much for complaining so I didn’t give them the chance to address this. They cleared my dishes and again I had a long wait before I actually flagged someone down to request my check. I would’ve expected at the bar a little bit more awareness of my readiness for ordering/check throughout my meal. Finally got the check, hastily stuck my credit card in it and they ran it. Well, the copy to sign came back and I realized that what I actually ate had been advertised out front as a $12.95 special (I think still priced for lunch maybe?) but was instead being charged as my second choice – a no-longer-on-special dish at $17.99 – and I think as a dinner special what I ate was supposed to be $16.95. At this point, I’m really not interested in waiting another round to deal with the issues over $1, so I just pay and go. I usually try to give the benefit of the doubt but I can’t say I would come back next time I’m in Birmingham.

Excellent atmosphere and service. There was a jazz trioplaying while I waited for my takeout ordered of boiled shrimp which turned out to be excellent. Nice oyster bar.

The Fish Market (downtown) is the original and is the home base George Sarris. The standard menu items are always good and the specials are always a treat. My standard items: Flounder Filets with Greek Potatoes and Broccolli.

I tried this place for the first time earlier this week for lunch. Upon entering the door, I was about knocked down with a powerful fishy stench. I sat in the self-serve seating area. It was confusing as I was given a pager for when my food was ready, but a table busser asked if I wanted him to bring my food when it was ready. I said sure, so he took my pager and went on his way. He was nothing but very polite, friendly and helpful. First arrived a cup of gumbo. It was steaming hot and very good. It wasn’t over-seasoned with spices, nor did it have sausage in it – just like I like it! My shrimp po boy was not so great. It was mostly bread and lettuce. I’m not a fan of the cocktail and tarter sauces staying on the tables all day, especially with open tops on them. The requisite slaw was nondescript and the table rocked with every movement of an arm. I think the price of $40 for two lunches and two waters is high. I will not be making any plans to return. To add, I felt like I smelled like that fishy stench until I got home (in TN) and changed my clothes, which was many hours later.

Best outdoor patio in Birmingham. Food is always good. Try the Fried Green Tomatoes. They makes some of the best in Birmingham, in my opinion. The breading has a little kick and they are fried perfect. The Athenian Snapper is always a staple. Their raw oysters and always plump.
