So I’ve only eaten here once since the Pizitz Food Hall has opened. I had the chance to try the Cuban sandwich at a pop up event they had at Trim Tab. That just might have been the best Cuban sandwich I’ve ever eaten! Last time I had to try the mofongo. It was quite good but the first time I’ve ever eaten it so no real comparison. However, I would absolutely recommend! The food is fantastic and service, while slower than I would have liked, was still friendly. Price point is high but worth the experience.

I hate to be the one to burst the enthusiasm bubble on a new restaurant, but I feel like this is important. I’ll start with the most important information. Typical review details will follow. I was sick for over twenty-four hours after having the pork mofongo. As I was eating it I found big pieces of vascular material mixed in with the pork. Big arteries/veins up to a quarter inch in diameter and the longest piece being about four inches long and three inches wide when counting the veins stemming from the central piece. At first I wondered if it was supposed to be some authentic touch to the dish, but I decided that even if it is authentic to the culture and food, they’d have to be crazy to serve this to most Americans without telling them what they’re about to eat. I did not finish the dish. After going to bed I woke up hours later with severe indigestion. I’m an adventurous eater and I never have indigestion. I’m talking about a Taco-Bell-doesn’t-phase-me iron stomach. This continued on-and-off for about a day-and-a-half with emergency-style bouts of indigestion. My girlfriend ate a couple bites of my mofongo while we were there and she, too, suffered the same symptoms, albeit milder, presumably since she ate less. Unpleasantness aside, here is what I would say if I hadn’t gotten sick. The first bites of the dish were quite good. The textures were good. The seasoning tasted great, although it was heavy-handed and I started to feel overwhelmed by it as the meal progressed. The presentation is straight-up food truck style, coming complete with the food plated in a plastic to-go container and finished with a zig-zag of sauce over the whole dish. The line progressed normally and I received my food in a normal amount of time. One thing I do appreciate is that they had free water as opposed to the bottle-only scam other vendors were running. My dish was $15.00 before tax, which I consider quite expensive considering that they have no table service, serve you with plastic containers and utensils, and offer a moderate portion. Mind you, I’m not complaining about any of these things for what they are, just saying that I know plenty of restaurants where I can get good food, full service, ceramic and steel, and a large portion of food for $12.00 before tax. But then I’m sure the rent is quite high at such a vogue establishment as the food hall, and I did distinctly feel like vogue was a part of what I was paying for as I looked around. I mostly dislike the concept of Yelp because it leave owners with absolutely no recourse against unfair, vindictive customers who will exaggerate and otherwise attack an entire establishment because a server didn’t smile at them that day or something stupid like that. The only reason I’ve posted this negative review is to warn people that I believe that there was some form of unsafe practice going on that day at Tropicaleo. Hopefully it was a fluke mistake and this will be an isolated incident.
