Louisiana comfort food…. After hearing so many good things about this place we decided to give it a try before heading to a show downtown. The service from the moment we stepped inside was incredible. Friendly, prompt and helpful. Service like this is a rare treat in Anchorage. We started with crab cakes. It came with a tasty sauce and corn salsa. The crab cakes were hot and tasty but not sure 2 crab cakes were worth the price. The corn salsa was the big hit. Spicy and crunchy and a perfect side for the crab cakes. We ordered jambalaya and gumbo for entrees. Neither was overly hot and spicy but a variety of hot sauces is available to help if that’s your thing. The jambalaya was rich and flavorful. Big chunks of chicken and sausage in a rich tomato broth with rice on the side. The rice on the side prevented it from becoming a thick rice paste which is how a lot of jambalaya is served. More of a stew consistency. The gumbo was an absolute treat. They don’t go heavy on the file seasoning so you get to taste layers of flavor. The rich, dark roux gave the broth a smoky, chocolate flavor without being overbearing. It was loaded with chicken, shrimp, sausage and oysters, so much you got a piece of something with every spoonful. By far this was the big winner of dinner. The corn muffins were tasty but it seemed strange that you had to buy them separately. One should come with every dish. For dessert we shared an order of bread pudding and it was very tasty. Moist, delicious and the sauce was not overpowering. We can’t wait to go back for another visit and try some of their other dishes. A table next to us ordered the pulled pork po’boy and it almost made me hungry enough to order one to go!!
Branch on Old Seward is good too!. We just tried out the new branch on Old Seward, and they are good too! They seem to have a bit more limited menu, but good flavors and fun decor.
Very disappointed. My wife has been wanting jambalaya all week so we tried the Gumbo House. We ordered jambalaya and gumbo. The gumbo had a strong unbearable burnt taste and the jambalaya had not flavor. I am not sure if their problems is entirely because their water is bad or if it is more than that. The water was horrible and so I ordered lemonade and it was house made and was ruined by the taste of the water. You would have to pay me to even consider going there again.
We loved the authentic Cajun food, bright and creative atmosphere, and the charming old house. Excellent Chardonnay and home made lemonade. We had the shrimp gumbo, jambalaya, and BBQ ribs. Mmmm! They took their time on the roux. The only disappointment was that we were charged extra for the yummy cornbread. Highly recommend this for locals and visitors. Only four or five blocks away from the downtown tourist area.
Gumbo was great, will come back and bring some friend.
Fast, friendly service. Excellent gumbo and jambalaya. We’ll be back to try the Po’boys.
Best Gumbo in the solar system. I’m a southern boy and this Gumbo is without question one of/if not the best I’ve ever had. I’ve had many of their other dishes too (Jambalaya, Po Boys, Catfish, fried oysters) and they have all been excellent as well. The kitchen sink bucket of Gumbo is my favorite and includes shrimp, oysters, andouille sausage, chicken, okra, trinity and rice. It is a hungry man sized portion. Two words: ‘Awesome Sauce!’ Atmosphere is a goofy kind of intriguing and the service/owner has always been great. The parking for this little house is off the alley way opposite of 9th Ave.
