Ate at Pizzeria Roma last night looking for a good slice of pie. Unfortunately, Pizzeria Roma was not it. When we entered, small and quaint with a decent selection of beers. However, our first beer selection was not available. Second one was and we went on with the meal. One of the appetizers, a foccacia, we asked for was also not available because they were out of bread. We settled for a caprese salad and a baked meatball dish. The caprese was solid, nothing outstanding. The meatballs were cooked in a small cast iron skillet in the pizza oven. This caused the bottom of the meatballs to be severely burned. Also, my wife witnessed the cook wiping the meat thermometer in his shirt before testing the temperature of the meatballs. There was some decent flavor there, but the preparation and cooking of the meatballs made the dish a complete failure. We also ordered pizza and lasagna. The lasagna was overrun with cheese and completely devoid of seasoning. Dissapointing after being recommended by the waitstaff. The pizza was well cooked and had decent sauce. However, they used an interesting combination of cooked, pre-cooked and raw items on the pie. The pepperoni was cooked with the cheese and sauce with the crust. I wished I stopped with pepperoni. The sausage was pre-cooked and added cold after the pizza came from the oven. Also added after cooking were raw green onions. This made for an interesting combination of hot and cold items on the pie. Very odd.We have nothing to compare Pizzaria Roma to in the Juneau area, but surely there is better pie somewhere.
Today I had lunch at Pizzeria Roma and I ordered the Margherita pizza. When I received the pizza it looked amazing and that was about it. The first piece I picked up all the toppings came off so I put them back on and took my first bite. Wow what a bland watery pizza sauce, mmmm. I was at a loss for words. In order to give this pizza any flavor, I had to add salt, pepper, crushed red pepper flakes, Parmesan cheese and finally hot sauce. The only other pizza I have ever had to do that to was a cheap frozen pizza. The only part of the pizza that was good was the outer crust. At least it was crispy. What I should have done was cut the outer crust off, threw the rest of the pizza away, ate the outer crust, drank the bottle of hot sauce and my iced tea and I might of had a decent meal. I won’t be going back.
