I can’t believe this place has a positive score. Literally the worst food ever served to Human Beings on the planet. This is a pretty popular place among the youth of the valley, who have no idea what good food is. If you grow up in the Mat-Su Valley you have eaten at places like this your whole life, and it’s pathetic that this place is even still open.Took my Wife there a few months back, because she kept saying her students and co-workers liked it. I cringed when she suggested this place. I think I started to puke in my mouth thinking about it.First you go in there and it smells like urine. It’s an ugly ass hotel lobby that you’re greeted with. Step to the right and you’re in the ugliest diner setting you’ve ever seen.Have a seat in the dilapidated booths, and your waitress with probable drug addiction will unhappily take your order. The cook in the dirty kitchen that probably has never been cleaned will prepare your food with unwashed hands and probably spit on the grill to clean it before putting your burger on it.I ordered a Reuben Sandwich and Corn Fritters, and my Wife ordered Chicken Strips. How they could screw this order up is just beyond me, but they did. If you order a Reuben at the Valley hotel, you’ll get a soggy sandwich with 3 inches of stinky, old sauerkraut, one small layer of corned beef and slathered in expired Thousand Island dressing. It stunk and was so soggy that it was inedible. Sure I’ll try the corn fritters I said. Literally balls of dough with two pieces of corn in them. My Wife’s chicken strips were basically Tyson brand from Fred Meyer that you cook in the microwave. Why do people eat here and actually like it?
Below average diner food. Some rave about the pies here. They’re really not that good. I know good pie and a great pie is not made with canned pie fillings. The crusts tend to be tough. They use lemon juice concentrate for the lemon meringue pie and lime juice concentrate for the key lime pie. I can always taste the difference between fresh juice and concentrates. The pies certainly look good but I wouldn’t go there just for that or you will be disappointed. The food is below average at best and the service is inconsistent. The place always seems like it needs a good scrubbing too. This place is open long hours so only go there if you’ve been drinking heavily at one of the local bars and you need to put some coffee and food in your belly to help you sober up before your drive back to Anchorage. Chances are, if your three sheets to the wind, you won’t notice it’s failings and there are many.
Small town comfort food. Your standard small town diner food. Ok general diner fare and better than average pizzas; have never had any complaints. Staff are nice and responsive. Our favorite from the VH is their meat lover’s pizza called the ‘Tower’. Generous toppings, always perfectly baked, and one of the few pizzas which we usually leave little or no crusts left for the four-legged tail waggers. The VH’s desert pies are fantastic and legendary but not worth the prices they charge for a whole pie.
The biscuits & gravy are terrible. The biscuits were hard and the gravy was cold. Also the omelette was rubbery. Our waitress overcharged us and didn’t check on us once!
One Thing…. When it comes to the Valley Hotel, there is only one word you need to know…Pie.You can leave the rest of the food and the bad coffee. (And the coffee is bad.) The service is not good and the ambiance is also right out of early 90’s. But…pie. They have a dancing assortment of house made pies that make the drive to Palmer worth it every time. Good for after a movie and you are looking for something sweet to accompany conversation late at night. Our favorite is the Peanut Butter Silk Pie. There are so many choices, if you want it, chances are, it’s there, even at 2am. You will not be disappointed, unless you don’t have pie. Then, plan on a grease-fest.
Wife and I went there about a week or so ago. Sat there for almost 10 minutes without seeing a server. Finally the manager (?) came out and said he’d look for our waitress for us. By this time, we’d seen two other tables walk out because it was taking so long. Our waitress finally came by and warned us that any order wouldn’t be out for at least 45 minutes. We ended up going elsewhere. Hopefully this isn’t a normal occurrence here? They lost quite a bit of business just in the time we were there.
Great Stop for a Bite. The food is good. This is a great family restaurant or late night place to grab a bite and visit for awhile. Most of all I adore the waitresses. They are lovely. We always enjoy our time there.
