  • Yea I can see why the chef was nominated for a James b award in 2001. Very dated dishes not staying current to the skill level of top chefs of today. …

Liking Going Home, but Better. How in the world did we wait 10 years living in Phoenix before eating at Tarbell’s? it’s wonderful! Not sure where to start – but on our first visit we all enjoyed the appetizers, entrees, sides, cocktails and deserts. My wife had trouble deciding what to have – a very good sign – and her cosmopolitan was mixed just right. On the second visit we were exposed to the Mac and Cheese and candied maple syrup bacon. Then on the third trip it was time for the spaghetti and meatballs – and perhaps the best meatball I’ve ever eaten. That time we were having a tough day and we said, hey let’s go to Tarbell’s and cheer up. Great idea. It was a cold night and my wife wanted a ‘hot buttered rum’ which the waitress said was an unusual request in Phoenix – agreed! It was excellent – as everything always is. Highly recommended – one of the best in Phoenix and consistently great.

Nice Pepper Steak. Signature steak cooked perfectly -simple but great taste. Good atmosphere and great service. Would recommend to anyone.

The food, the wine and the service was simply wonderful! I shared the kale salad – the first time kale actually tasted good for me! – the short ribs just melted on my fork and I couldn’t finish the profiteroles! I can’t wait to go back!

Great food, Great service, Great place. When friends come in from New York or Philadelphia this is where we go and we’ve never been disappointed. By the way, we like to go there by ourselves too.The service is great and the server is actually around enough to take care of any problems or to get a drink or whatever. The food varies from good to great and the wine list has some great wines and covers the spectrum of the food fairly well.I believe this restaurant is among those in the valley that help set the standard to which others should aspire. I can happily recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Susie Q. My friend and I recently went to Tarbells. We were really looking forward to it as we had heard it was fantastic. We were seated right away upon arriving, as we had a reservation, but found the tables to be incredibly close together. My freind spent half the evening looking at the waiters backside as he stood between tables taking orders etc. The food was good but certainly not outstanding We started with the mussels and the beet salad. The mussels were good and plentiful, but the beet salad with goat cheese was just a pile of cubed beets with maybe a half a teaspoon of tiny goat cheese crumbles. Not impressive. My friends steak was the best dish , while my much hyped chicken was just chicken. Nice but not anything special. We shared a desert, the cheesecake with rosemary carmel sauce. The sauce was very good, but the cheesecake was again just cheesecake. All in all, it was a very dissappointing dinner. Noca, a nearby restaurant, is by far a more impressive dining spot. Chef Tarbell should stop posing for pictures and get back to cooking.

Arizona Restaurant Week Dinner Wednesday 22nd Septirst Course (choice of):Tuscan Kale Salad with lemon, hemp seed, olive oil, golden raisins & ParmesanKale was a large piece, and was difficult to cut, should be served in smaller pieces.Second Course (choice of):Pan-Seared Halibut with olive-oil whipped potatoes and Tar’s Ratatouille of pearl onions, Shishito peppers, squash, eggplant & basil oilBoth outstanding!Third Course (choice of):Butterscotch Tart with Caramelized PancettaNot impressed with dessert, it sounded good, but was not.05 Apr, 2010Fantastic Dinner. We have had dinner here on several occasions, Mark, and his staff come up with some great creations that pair well with choices. One of the only places in town that offers Armagnac a French brandy that is great after dinner.

Pork Chops!. I’m not sure what the previous reviewer ate, but my double cut pork chop was at least 2 inches thick and there was no portion size issues with my meal- in fact the portion could have been smaller and I would have still been happy with the quality. The cheddar grits and braised kale were unbelievable compliments to the pork and the service was great. The field greens salad was also great- diced beets and shaved fennel were fantastic. I sat at the bar and was waited on attentively, but not overwhelmingly, and would definitely go back. The vanilla bean profiteroles and dessert black tea were super delicious as well- again with the portion size thing- I’ve never seen profiteroles this big before, and I unfortunately could only stuff one of the two on the plate into my mouth. This place has an old school Los Angeles feel to it- lots of mid-20th century vibes in a good way. I was probably the youngest person in the restaurant by at least 20 years- definitely frequented by the older folks of Phoenix… but who cares? The food and drinks were great.
