Duck breast to die for. My wife and I visited Wednesday, 5 Nov 14 because their on-line menu mentioned Duck. Sad to say, arrived at restaurant and no duck on printed menu. Wait a moment, said Karen, our server, let me check…Celine, the Chef, had a duck breast and would prepare it for us. Karen then recommended a wonderful Pinot Noir and, well, it just got better and better. The Duck was superb, the wine great, and everybody was so wonderfully attentive, that we just had to come back on the 7th for our anniversary dinner (the reason for this trip to Carefree). Again, we had Duck, but it was even better. I am siting savouring this wonderfully prepared Duck and thinking, how do you make perfect better? And, the appies and desert and cappuccino were all excellent. So, If you haven’t yet guessed, my wife and I heartily recommend Venues Cafe in Carefree AZ.
I had a really good experience at venues caf. I stopped in for lunch on a Friday and the staff was extremely friendly and attentive. The mushroom Swiss Burger was simply amazing. I also ordered the onion rings instead of fries and have to say they were probably the best I’ve had in years. Good house Chardonnay as well. Great indoor setting. I would recommend this place although to be fair I have not had dinner here yet.
Service was great but food was bland and cold. Enough said.
Poor service and hair in food. I found a short black hair in my salad dressing. The manager stated that her chef is bald, so she couldn’t undertand where the hair came from. She was very defensive and rude about it. It was short so could have been arm hair, body hair or pet hair, either way, I had very quietly informed them and they were very rude to me.
Gem in the middle of Carefree. I read some mixed reviews on this restaurant so didn’t go for a while. Went last night and it was a pleasant surprise. The atmosphere is sort of western urban chic with a nice shiny wood bar (which is huge by the way!) and smooth jazz quartet but with lots of TVs for sports fans. The service and food were exquisite. Responding to a review complaining about no bread, if you want huge portions and food overflowing from your plate, go to Golden Corral. This place has delicious food with great presentation and extremely accommodating service. We have been to all of the restaurants in the Carefree/Cave Creek area and this is in the top 3. I highly recommend restaurant and will be going back often.
How about no?. I have to confess, I miss Blue Sky. The eatery which occupied the space now belonging to Venues and before, you know, the Peruvian place with the owner who chased people out of his restaurant while swearing. However, if this had been the first establishment to occupy said space, or if it had replaced a meeting hall for super villains, Venues would still not be a good place to eat.Worth mentioning: Venues Cafe gave away 100 free dinners to their first 100 patrons. I missed out on this, but I was much enchanted by such novel marketing. After eating there, I suspect it enchanted certain patrons a little too much. The menu is small. Very small. It’s actually the smallest menu to be offered at this location. Blue Sky ran twice as many dainties out of the same kitchen and even the Peruvian place had more, their menu being considered anemic, if not sad. There’s a little something for all tastes, but by little I mean possibly one. The food itself is pretty good. Appetizers fared best at our table. Sandwiches? Just good. Dessert was the real bomb featuring inedible tarts and chocolate mousse obviously made with the Nestle mix. Some of the pricing was kind of odd too. Say, for $8 one could get sweet potato fries with a special sauce as an appetizer. Well, also for $8, one can have a sandwich with a side of such fries (nowhere on the menu is it stipulated that sandwiches include sides, mind you) that equals the appetizer portion, but comes with plain ketchup. So, the lemon sauce is worth the same as a sandwich? Our waiter was a JERK. My dining companions wanted to cut him some slack since the place was crowded and obviously understaffed, but let me tell you that man could NOT get away from our table fast enough and I would not have tipped him a dime. He also did that obnoxious waiter thing where he tried to finish our orders for us and then turned his nose up at our corrections. My bleeding heart table mate chose to address the manager about the service situation. How she did this over the DIN… it’s so loud in there, you WILL end up shouting across the table, but you will NOT hear the live music billed, even if you are sitting next to the saxophonist. Anyway, the owner could not have given less of a crap.Right now, all this place has to go on is novelty. There is no reason for Venues to get crowded at night, and someday soon, the people of Carefree will realize that. We have better places to eat an socialize. We don’t have to take Venues lying down.
