I am a big proponent of local businesses and Nobu is our go to place for intimate dinners … as both me and my husband absolutely love Japanese cuisine. My husband is always delighted to go here on special occasions. I have not had any thing on the menu in this restaurant that I have disliked … however the can see that the place is not inexpensive and hence some of the items could seem overpriced. Our all time favorite dishes; grapefruit & hamachi, coconut curry lamb, any specials of the day esp. sashimi and tuna tataki. They also have nice drinks.
While dishes sounded creative, it’s a pretty limited menu and only gluten free accommodation was a mixed green a tomato salad with no dressing or ceviche. I ordered the ceviche and it was 4 bites and cost $16. Husbands warm duck salad was smaller than described as a meal for 1 (he’s not a big eater) and he was charged the $16 dinner rate instead of the $14 lunch rate. He felt the deconstructed presentation made it unbalanced and not that enjoyable. Only go here if you have low expectations and money to burn. I won’t be back.
Firstly, to have a Nobuo tucked away in the middle of downtown Phoenix is both surprising and exactly why I think Phoenix’s food scene is so fantastic. In the restored Teeter house, that emanates a historic charm and feels like you’ve been invited into someone’s simply and serenely decorated home, you get to indulge in top notch service and stunning sushi. We went here for AZ Restaurant week and started off with perfectly crisp beers even though the cocktails and wine list are not to be missed. Nobuo has a keen eye in terms of wine selection and liquor and it should be noted that it goes against the preconceived notion that Asian food has a hard time pairing with such sips. The appetizer featuring seasonal vegetables and fruit was outstanding most notably the watermelon salad, charred edamame with bonito flakes. In almost perfect timing we received our bentos one featuring fish and the other terrestrial meat. The short rib was perfectly seared to a medium rare and left perfectly seasoned, the pork belly bun was succulent and mouthwateringly rich. For the fish, the mackerel was seared skin on and flaky and light similarly served simply to let it’s buttery and citrusy notes shine. The hamachi was faint worthy fantastic and beautifully prepared. This might come as a great surprise as it did for us but the finale of dessert was spectacular. With green tea mousse cake that was light, airy, yet still moist and delicately balanced in flavor and my goat cheese sabayon with fresh berry compote, roasted plums, and a miso shortbread crumble I was bowled over to say the least. The sabayon truly was symphonic in terms of a sweet ending to a truly inspired meal. Now time to save up all my pennies for the Omakase of my dreams…some day! instagram.com
