Rushed Out. I enjoyed the quaint space of this restaurant until my date and I were ran out by demanding our payment at 9:15pm, although they’re open until 10pm (it was a Friday night) and there were 4 other tables in the restaurant. I don’t know why exactly they demanded we pay at 9:15pm but I hope it was for a good reason. :-/ The edamame was overcooked, making them taste mushy like canned peas and it was an incredible small portion of about 10 pods. The sushi was good but my overall experience was unfortunately a bad one.

A restaurant that wouldn’t take my order. Called for a take out order and was refused. I have ordered take out here before and by the same gentleman that answered the phone. Apparently, there is no way for them to service their restaurant and do a take out order. I would have waited 1.5 hours. Foolish business.

Bad sushi, high prices. I frequent many sushi bars in the area and I would not recommend this place at all. My usual meal at every sushi restaurant is a chirashi bowl and a spicy tuna roll. A chirashi bowl is a bowl of mixed sashimi on a bed of rice. For me it is always a good way to determine just how good the sushi restaurant because this bowl has almost every type of sashimi you find on their menus – albacore, tuna, salmon, squid, egg, yellowtail, tuna belly, fish eggs, etc.Now concerning Shimogamo, not only were the portions very small for both the chirashi bowl and the spicy tuna roll, there was absolutely no flavor in the fish, neither did it look fresh. They charge high prices here -the chirashi bowl was $25, the spicy tuna roll was $6.25. The rice in the chirashi bowl was also dry, hard, and not cooked properly to be sushi riceI would recommend going to Sakana, specifically the location in ahwatukee. Portions are good sized, the fish is fresh, has flavor, and prices are reasonable. A chirashi bowl at Sakana is $16 while a spicy tuna roll is about $6. Also they are always consistent here, which is a huge factor in Japanese restaurants. If you don’t believe give Shimogamo a shot, Sakana in ahwatukee a shot, and then you’ll realize how much time, money, and effort you’ve wasted.

Great Service and Food. After an issue with the owner at another restaurant, I gave a call to Shimogamo where the owner agreed to cater to a rather large group of us without much of a notice. The service was amazing, and the food was fresh and delicious. The place was beautiful and clean, and the access to the full bar next door was very helpful and fun.The only dish I did not care for much was the vegetarian roll, but my vegetarian friend did!

Good Japanese Food in Chandler. Being owned by a Japanese man and his family means a lot, and the wide variety and high quality reflect that authentic ownership. He is a kind and diligent man who works hard for his customers. Anyone visiting Shimogama will see his efforts in the excellent decor, food and service. I share the feeling by others that this feels like a Japanese place we’ve been to in Tokyo. The miso-flavored cod fish was by far the best dish for us on our last visit. We went on our wedding anniversary and then headed over to Roka Akor for dessert 😉 RA is still the king of Japanese food in Arizona, but Shimogamo has many positives going for it, located east of the 101 on Warner in the Southeast Valley.

Japanese Food for the Japanese. They make Japanese food as it should be. Being Japanese myself, I have always had a hard time finding Japanese food that was actually affordable and was not twisted into some kind of Americanized version. Shimogamo is very affordable and they make food that is truly authentic. Eating there always reminds me of home.
