Very dissapointing. Just returned from dinner here. The server suggested a few things. I ordered the cinco combo – shredded beef, a cheese enchilada and a chile releno w beans. surprising, it did not come with rice. the chips and salsa like everything else was just OK. whatever flavor there was did not appeal to me. for $18 a plate plus drink i would have hoped for much better. the meal was over priced and under appealing. i have had better food at chains -much better in fact.naturally, i will not be back nor do i recommend.i learned 2 lessons with restaurants over the last week -ignore the recommendations of others unless i find online reviews to back it up. some people will recommend, even highly, purely based on reputation -not personal experience. reputation like ambiance are 2 things i cannot eat. show me the food!2nd, never try to shoe horn a dish in on a restaurant for whom that dish is not one of their top 3-4 recommended dishes. that is experimental food which often ends with disappointment if not tragedy. :0
Terrible food and service. Had chicken and shrimp fajitas. All bad
Gone Downhill. A bit of back ground. I am seventh generation in southern Arizona and northern Mexico. I have eaten in Mexican restaurants and cafes in just about every town in S. Ariz. Now, the last time I was in El Charro Cafe was a few years ago and the food was good. I won’t say great because if it had been great I would have returned more often. However I remember who I was with and it was a memorable afternoon. My latest trip into the Cafe took place on Monday, Feb. 24th at about 11.45 am. The greeter was nice and as the place was pretty empty my party had our choice of seating . After we were seated a less than enjoyable visit began to develop. It was obvious that the waiter was unhappy with us taking a bit of time to look over the menus and discuss the option. (We took about 10 minutes all said). He brought our drinks and then took our orders. A few minutes alter a waitress appeared with chips and salsa so we dug in. Several of us were mildly disappointed as the salsa tasted like it came out of a tomato sauce can and had maybe some cyan pepper as well as salt and pepper added with a bit of tomato, We tasted no tomatillo, cilantro or onion and definitely no red or green chili peppers. Finally after a half hour our food selections showed up and it was…. I can only say bad. My flour tortilla on my burro was hard. I actually tapped it with my fork to show the others, I cut into the burro and there were no juices, just overcooked pulled pork with some of it burnt. This was supposed to be Chile Verde but I found no green chili but did find a small amount of red. The taste of the burro filling was so bland that it could have been almost anything. the meat made me think of stringy horse or cat meat. It was so stringy and tough that I couldn’t keep it from getting stuck between my teeth. The other members of the party found the same with their burros, etc. This lunch was a major disappointment and I for one have visited El Charro for the last time. Within just a short time after leaving we arrived back at the corp. office and everyone headed for the restrooms as all of our stomachs were in full revolt. Mine didn’t completely recover until the next day. I could go on but why? If you choose to go, don’t say you weren’t warned.I think the owners are relying on ignorant tourists to keep the place in business. It is a shame.
Disappointed. I’d made a reservation well in advance for my wife’s 65th birthday. I asked for a good table for a special birthday celebration and was assured they would make a note of it. You can probably tell where this is going. They placed us at a table very near the kitchen and on the main path for ALL the waiters, busboys and waitresses to go back and forth. I tried to get us moved but was told to talk to the manager. Of course he never showed his face out in the restaurant even though I asked for him. The food was adequate. Their carne seca (dried beef) is their main claim to fame. It’s good but we had better in a little hole in the wall Mexican restaurant in Florence (L & B Inn). Their prices are higher than the experience and food warrants. I think they are coasting on history and reputation and I would not go back.
Very crowded but they got 5 of us seated right away. Great food and service.
We really enjoyed the food here. The carne seca is awesome; I got it in the combo #5. We tried the guac after a previous review. It was fine, but overpriced and a small portion. Like others, we thought the service was slow.
Good place. Good service. Good food. I would eat here again.
