I had the opportunity to dine at Taverna Greek Grill recently. I was greeted at the door my a gracious host, seating me at my table of choice quickly and efficiently. My waitress showed up immediately, providing me with a menu and asking if I would like anything to drink…I decided to go with the unsweetened tea…however, on a previous visit I tried some of their draft beer…and it was excellent. The restaurant was an interesting mix of Greek kitsch decoration and sports bar…with flat screen TVs mounted throughout the bar area. I soon place my order for hummus and pan seared salmon. While waiting for my meal, a nearby customer received a flaming meal…the flames shot up more than two feet into the air. I began to wonder if fire extinguishers were positioned anywhere nearby…it seemed to be a bit dangerous. My food soon arrived. From the best I could tell, the bed of quinoa vegetable mixture underneath the salmon was missing the quinoa, corn, and horseradish listed on the menu. At any rate…perhaps I was mistaken. The pan seared salmon was dry and flavorless. It wasn’t very good at all, especially when considering the $17 I paid for the plate. In contrast to the main entree, the hummus and pita bread was excellent! It was actually some of the best hummus I’ve ever had. I don’t want to give the impression that the food at Taverna Greek Grill isn’t good…that certainly is not the case. Perhaps my pan seared salmon was not good…but on previous visits the Gyro Plate and the Santorini Chicken proved to be quite delicious. If you are ever in the Flagstaff area…stop by and give the Taverna Greek Grill a try…the food is usually quite good…just keep an eye out for a fire extinguisher should the need arise!
