One of my favorite spots to bring out-of-town guests is the Desert Botanical Garden and it always includes a meal at Gertrude’s. I especially love Chef Matt Taylor’s Southern-influenced dishes here. Favorites include the Dirty Chips with crispy chicken livers, smoked onions, and blue cheese fondue, smoked salmon tartare and cider-cured duck. Well-crafted cocktails too. Try the Hummingbird, or for dessert, the Tundra. We’ll be back again with my parents visiting from Boston next week. writeonrubee.com

This is a pricey, trendy place with food that tries too hard. They are trying to mix exotic flavors and offer sculptural presentations, but in my opinion the food falls short. I had the French Dip. The smoked meat was very dry; an aioli spread did little to mitigate this, and the dipping sauce was essentially onion soup. The fries were good. My wife had a quinoa salad with a lemon mayonnaise that she enjoyed. A salad and sandwich with one glass of wine and a soft drink came to $45–the entrees were considerably more expensive. I think you are paying for the garden ambience and the elaborate presentation. Simpler, more honest food would work better.

Great for breakfast. Eggs Benedict were as good as any I’ve ever had. But, non-traditional. Fritata and quiche are also delicious but the portions were small so be prepared to order additional food if you’re hungry.

S L O W……….. Third time there on Sunday 11/3/2013. The food was tasty, but the service, as usual, was s_l_o_w. No silverware or napkins when we were seated. Drinks didn’t arrive until AFTER our beet salad was served. Not sure whether it was the kitchen or server, but my fritatta was not hot. Had to ask the food runner to FINALLY bring us some silverware and napkins. Ordered the Cuatro Caramel Sundae. It sat for so long that the ice cream had melted. Never saw any popcorn. I will applaud our server for bringing some more ice cream on the side. Noticed similar things going on at nearby tables. Definitely not a good value for the price, nor a good experience. Great location, wish they could get their game-on.Previous visits were similar. Probably won’t go back again for $60 brunch for 2, with no alcohol.
