This place was so good we went twice…and I wish they had food like that up here in Calgary because I’ve never had calamari like that or the jalapeo shooters…..mexican food heaven!Okay on our first trip there we all had the calamari and instead of your usual rings and tentacles they did it like chicken fries – sticks! They came amazingly tender (no chewy seafood texture), with an amazing chipotle sauce we all held onto to go with our main courses, and a fresh roasted tomato/cilandro dip. For my main I had the chili relleno, which was baked with rice inside (something I’ve never had before), with roast pork and cheeses mixed in. It had a little tomato sauce, two corn tortilla rounds, and it was so good I ate till I hurt. badly. The walk to the car for the 5 min drive back down the road to where we were staying was rough, but totally worth it. The white sangria was very light and refreshing especially next to such a heavy meal.On our second trip our server John was fantastic. D and I shared a plate of Jalapeo Shooters which were so good I cleaned out my little shot glasses (when its so good you have to lick your fingers clean you know it’s worth it). The jalapeos were definitely fresh because of the sheer spiciness of them (they lose their oomph when they sit too long in a grocery store as opposed to homegrown/fresh off the plant). We’d had to wait for our order because their quality control was so good that John apologized to us for having to hold our order of shooters – the tips had been burnt and he wouldn’t bring the first run out to us. I have no problem waiting with staff who will catch cooking accidents like that rather than serving them. I honestly appreciate that kind of quality control and wish more places were as diligent…I tried the red sangria this time which was refreshing and absolutely loved it. Since mom had had the fajitas on our first trip I thought I’d try the shrimp ones this time for my main course. They came out sizzling hot, smoking a little, and you couldn’t touch the plate they were on because the cast iron was ridiculously hot. The tortillas were too hot to touch at first so those need to cool a little before you fill them, but they were soft and tasty, and I got extras because the first 4 aren’t nearly enough for the amount of shrimp, peppers and onions they give you. Ate so much my stomach hurt…again! And yet we still made room for the banana wraps for dessert this time. Delicious! All in all, I wish they had this place in Calgary instead…I’d have trouble not going for dinner every day…!

The Spotted Donkey is located is the now deserted Pedregal Mall that is part of The Boulders Resort owned by Hilton at this time (2017) This is a South West Style Restaurant that serves Mexican Style Food. I tried the Mexico City Carne Asada. I would not recommend ordering it if it comes out like the one they served me. The steak was chewy and most of the food had unpleasant taste and texture to it. My husband tried the Poblano Chile Relleno. It was a Poblano Pepper stuffed with mushy pork and greasy rice that was topped with weird tasting tomato sauce. Our server was pleasant and chipper but I would not come back for what I tried.

Lunch at The Spotted Donkey was perfect. The restaurant is comfortable with great decor and excellent service. The house made tortilla chips were very fresh and the salsa was so tasty. Our meals were chimichangas and fajitas which I would highly recommend. Both meals were fresh and flavourful. A must if you’re looking for amazing south west cuisine!
