Like a youth group car wash, only with Sushi. We went on a tip from my spouses boss, who professes to be a foodie… I presume he is the type of foodie that has a favorite dish at Applebee’s. I was apprehensive, I’m always apprehensive of strip mall dining. My fear is that I will wind up dining in what looks like a rent to own furniture store, only with less variety. The decor of Sushi Hama hit that mark with perfection (can we stop with the acoustic ceiling tiles please? If I want to dine in an office environment, I’ll stay at my desk at work and order delivery.) Despite this lack of environment, it was promising at first, we were seated by two hostesses and three separate members of the wait staff attempted to take our drink order (which Hostess #2 had already taken.) I was of two minds on this: part of me felt like they were taking customer service to a new level, part of me found the whole experience a bit schizophrenic. We ordered the all you can eat Sushi. I figure if I am dining on production grade sushi, I might as well go long and have a big feed. And this was clearly production grade, which I knew before I entered. Had I wanted good Sushi, I would not have been driving to a strip mall. But, who eats top shelf every night? Anyways, if you stick to the Nigiri you can always come out ahead on an AYCE, and you’ve limited your order to a product almost impossible to completely screw up. The Sushi was actually serviceable – fresh enough, and served at the right temperature. A few of the orders could have benefited from a more substantial piece of Nori (which they seemed to be skimping on – but at this point skimping on the cheapest item on the ingredient list seemed to fit the psychologically disturbing motif they were working.) The pieces were smallish, but well assembled, and exactly the quality I was expecting. No complaints on that. The downside was the service. That initial rush of multi-waiter blitz defense? It was there for the first round. By the second round we were down to one waiter, and by the third, he was nowhere to be found. (And I feel I must point out that the third order consisted mostly of items from rounds one and two that were never brought and had to be requested again.) I was told that they were very busy, but I saw no less than 7 empty tables. Maybe more sushi chefs and fewer hosts would be a good plan on a Friday night. Or, maybe this was something else entirely. We flagged our waiter after round three and asked for the check, which he had to us in less than two minutes – an amazing increase in response time. It left me feeling like this was the sushi equivalent to those Asian buffets that advertise crab legs but only stock the buffet line with a one or two clusters at a time (pump it up big, then drag ass to assure people don’t eat much.) Would I return? Perhaps for lunch, if it were convenient.
