I like it, but they constantly change their bar menu— and it was way better before. They used to have delish items like ahi tuna towers and polenta fries and such. Now it’s hard to find anything really yummy. The bartender is awesome and service is great. Just

Not good. First time eating here. Fruit was old soggy like it was many days old. Orange slices were dried up with curled edges.Soup was terrible. Like they took old french onion soup and threw mushrooms in it.. Food was edible but didn’t taste good. Should have been good for what it cost. Never going back there. Ever. The building was gorgeous though. Needs new chefs for sure.

Back to France. Only in France have I eaten food that is so wonderfully prepared and presented. It is not just unusual but it tastes good. Like France, do not go in a hurry. Dinner there is an evening affair. Great food is not fast food. True artistry for the palate.

Kudo’s to the Chef – Please Fix the Service. Ella’s is an upscale restaurant inside the Inn at Carnall Hall. It’s a turn of the century residence inn. It’s a wonderful setting with creaking old wood floors leading up to the restaurant. Ella’s is a simple black cloth restaurant with minimal decorations. It’s elegant and peaceful. The kitchen and chef get a huge kudo’s from me. The food was fantastic and well prepare. Every dish married the flavors together to create palate pleasing food. The apple cinnamon pancakes were stuffed with apples. The eggs in the Eggs Benedict were poached just right. The spinach and sauce came together nicely. The special offered was egg and ham on a ciabatta roll. What married it together was a reduced Guiness Stout. It was an amazing flavor over the dish. The country potatoes were another home run. No salt was detected, but it was flavored very well.As good as the food was the service lacked. They were not busy. Two thirds of the place was empty. The hostess and server were polite, but not genuine. They also were not attentive. Glasses of water and coffee sat empty. Over the course of an hour, my coffee was filled once. It sat empty even though I wanted coffee. The food came out at different times. For an upscale restaurant, I expected the chef and/or manager to make one pass through. He/she was a no show.I really like Ella’s. The century old building creates a great atmosphere. The food is superb. I’ll take average service with those two pluses.9/21/14 Update – same impression. Really good food. Service is bad. Please learn how to be attentive. Learn proper small talk. Make the guest feel special.

Elegant breakfast place. Although Ella’s is an elegant place for any meal, I particularly like it for breakfast. The food is always done just right in an appetizing presentation. The coffee is French Press and delicious. The service is impeccable, warm and friendly. The room is quiet and elegant.

Ella’s -A Destination. Great food, exceptional service in a wonderful historic building on the edge of the U of A campus. Don’t miss it.
