I tried it again after a long time off. I decided to stop in and try the place again, it had been a while since we ate here. I had the Chicken Fried Steak, Smashed Potatoes, Turnip Greens an Pinto Beans. It was ok, nothing stood out, nothing was special, it was a tad bit bland actually. It was diner/plate lunch food, that’s it. It cost more to eat here than Cracker Barrel, Perkins or Dixie while serving the same type food. I’ve had some of their other foods, like the gumbo. I won’t say I’ll never go back, but it is highly unlikely.
Pricey. Neat little place in a little old house. We ate breakfast here recently and really enjoyed it. We were the only people in the restaurant. The waitress was friendly as was the cook. The food was good, the bathroom was clean. I did find it a bit on the pricey side so I doubt we will visit regularly.
Unfortunately the service was slow and unfriendly for our visit. Myself and my two small children waited over 45 minutes for our food before we finally gave up and left. The food on other tables looked pretty good so I was disappointed that we had to leave.
Green Herb Catering. We have breakfast there every Saturday and Sunday. The pancakes are the best in town. Ask for your hashbrowns browned and they will be glad to brown them a little longer.
What can I say? Hot Springs is lacking in soul food restaurants. This might be as close as it gets. I give it a B minus as some things were good– like the gumbo and fried pickles, others were bland — like the turnip greens and pinto beans — while others were bad — French fries. The catfish was nothing to write home about. The hush puppies were a little too moist. Hot springs needs some good southern soul food. Maybe someday.
One word – comfy. This is the kind of place that really cooks their own food, not by specific recipes, but by taste and feel. I think most times I visit here I end up with the 5 veggie plate that has to include the red beans and rice, Shells-n-cheese, turnip greens, red potatoes plus fried okra and topping it all off with some of the best cornbread in town. My son ordered the cheeseburger and claimed it was his favorite with my wife getting what she said was the best chicken fried steak ever. Consistently good, with daily lunch specials . Try this one of a kind family owned place once and you will return again and again.
