What has happened to my beloved Mexico Chiquito?. Okay, so I grew up on Mexico Chiquito and have always been a fan. First, when they had their sit-down location in Lakewood Village in NLR and now that I actually live in Little Rock, I’ve been a loyal customer of the West Little Rock location that opened a few years ago on Cantrell Rd. When this location opened I hadn’t had their food in years so I was pretty excited to hear it was coming. And of course, it didn’t disappoint when it did open. But fast forward to 2015, and it is NOT what it used to be.When we walked in at 5p.m. on a Friday night, the restaurant was dead. Maybe one other family and a couple there. I’ve been here around this time on Fridays and Saturdays before and it was always packed, so this wasn’t a good sign. There were a handful of servers there- all behaving like children. When our waiter gave us our menu, I was expecting to see a colorful, photo-filled menu that they always have. Now it’s just a laminated sheet of orange paper with stains all over it. When our waiter brought us our chips and salsa, I was disappointed to see that the chips we were given were no longer the chips I had grown to love from Mexico Chiquito. They looked and tasted as if they had been pulled straight out of a bag. Not the freshly made chips I was used to. When our cheese dip was brought by, I held my breath- if they had changed their cheese dip recipe, I’m pretty sure I would’ve walked out then and there. But thankfully they didn’t touch that. Our waiter didn’t check on us consistently and when my chimichanga arrived, there was no cheese dip on it as I had requested. Since we hardly saw our waiter, I decided that trying to get the problem fixed wasn’t worth it and just poured my appetizer cheese dip on it. When we went to pay our bill, the cashier didn’t ask if how our experience was. He seemed more preoccupied in the discussion he was having with the servers. I hate that Mexico Chiquito- at least this location- is going downhill. It had such promise when it opened. Now it seems like it’s in danger of closing. I hope that this was just a one-night problem and that they stay full and with good service the rest of the time. For my money, though, I’ll just stick with the drive through location on Markam.
