Alameda isn’t exactly the Sticks. But it isn’t Hayes Valley either. After moving out of SF about 15 years ago and living in Manhattan for a while, I ended up in Alameda for it’s proximity to the City, schools and house prices. And now that I’ve made my bed, I’ve got to lie in it. And eat in it (if you’ll excuse the poor analogy). Alameda isn’t yet a hotbed of culinary vision. But we are getting there. One of the best steps forward in my (albeit limited) time here has been Pappo over by the newly renevated (and beautiful) movie theater on Central (@ Park St.). Pappo is the one restaurant in Alameda that doesn’t seem like someplace my parents (or grandparents) would go. It’s the kind of place I like to go. NICE wine list. Love the Sancerre. Sometimes I’ll stop in just for a glass at the bar (OK, give me some of those fried olives – I’m not proud). The menu changes (another difference from every other restuaurant in town) seasonally. Last week I had a dish that inspired me to take fifteen minutes out of my life and write this review. Let me lay it down for you: Lamb sirloin, tender, perfectly cooked, with that just right amount of lamby-ness. A mushroom bread pudding that was one of those things you just kind of relax your shoulders and concentrate on your tastebuds with. The veggie was brussel sprouts with pancetta (i think) – love brussel sprouts. And again, cooked really well. Nothing silly like aparagus foam or harissa. Just straight forward really good food in the kind of place an ex-urbanite like me is happy going. So there it is. Thank God for Pappo. Otherwise it’s cruddy Thai or (gasp) cooking myself.
