Fun & Cheap. Shakas has HH from 7:30pm-11:00pm…..seven fricking days a week!! now that in and of itself deserves a hearty 4 stars!! woot! i met up with a few friends on saturday for a birthday shindig and ended up having a fantastic time. since we arrived at 7pm and HH did not start for another 30mins, i did the frugal chinese and waited for HH to roll around prior to ordering. haha! the eight of us started with the appetizers on the HH menu. we basically ordered one of everything to share (sampler platter, popcorn chicken, manapua & kalua tacos) and all got a some booze as well. $3 for a pint of hefeweizen? rock on! $6 for a sampler platter of chicken wings, beef kebabs and spam musubi? $3 for popcorn chicken? damn, i am loving it! – the chicken wings were nice and hot and a bit sweet….good stuff. – the beef kebabs were decent, tender yet a bit gristly at the same time. – the kalua taco’s were kinda disappointing though. the taco was stuffed with kalua pork, lettuce, tomatoes and cheese….however, when i bit into it, i encounter a lot of mushy/gelatinous pork fat….ewww. – the popcorn chicken was ok. it was a bit too greasy for my taste. – i didn’t have a spam musubi though…..something about sharing food…………lol. i ended up ordering the 442nd combo. this combo was named after the WWII japanese american combat unit. these guys joined the military even though the gov’t stripped their family of their livelihoods and tossed them into internment camps. wow! kudo’s to them! the 442nd combo allows the diner to choose two from the following: – teriyaki chicken, – teriyaki beef – chicken curry – kalua pork and cabbage – sesame chicken wings – honu pepper chicken – char siu – kal bi (galbi) i went with the kalua pork & cabbage and the chicken wings (yea, i can’t get enough of it). the entree also comes with mac salad and rice. the kalua pork and cabbage was quite taste. the pork was nice and tender and not fatty at all (unlike the kalua taco i ate). delicious. i tore the chicken wings apart. mmm…mmm….good! all in all, the service was decent although we had to flag the folks down occasionally to order more booze. one of the waitresses knocked over the martini shaker with the shots and spilled some booze……kinda just said sorry and didn’t attempt to replace the spilled booze. lame-o. i am going to go back and try the loco moco next time. i wish they would open on on the westside so that i can rock the late(r) happy hour. then again, my ass would probably get hella fat and end up joining the sumo circuit in hopes of becoming the next yokozuna.
