Nice surprise. Looking for a economical alternative to Great Castle and a food upgrade from The Rice Bowl – found it at Hong Kong.Caught the Early Bird Dinner (4-6PM) special on a Saturday night. Had the Orange Chicken, Orange Beef, and Sweet n Sour Chicken. All three entrees were very good, portions were substantial and each dinner included Chow Mein, Fried Rice, Hot n Sour Soup, Fried Won Tons, and Egg Rolls. TONS of food for $7.25/dinner. A little out of the way – Chester, just South of California – but worth the drive.
Good Food, Good Price.. I must have passed by this restaurant several hundred times without ever really thinking about stopping in, until I wanted some Chinese food and didn’t want to go too far from home. Since my first visit about two months ago, I’ve been back probably five times. There are a couple of other Chinese restaurants I prefer in Bakersfield, but they are all considerably more expensive and farther from home. One of my favorite items is the House Special Fried Rice which includes shrimp, beef, and chicken. This is definitely a meal in itself. I would prefer this dish to be more intensely spiced and have a bit of ‘heat’ to it, but I usually just add a little soy sauce and use some hot chili oil. I also recommend their Cashew Nut Chicken and S&S Pork.A friend and I have also taken in a lunch special about two weeks ago which again was very fairly priced and included soup and an appetizer.Portions are fair for the price. The ingredients taste fresh and are not overcooked and there is still plenty of bite (crunch) in the cooked vegetables. Again, my biggest complaint would be under seasoned food. For some, this might just be a good thing…I like my food to be seasoned generously.I would rate the Hong Kong Restaurant 6.5/10. Only a very small number of restaurants have ever reached a 10, so 6.5 is a fair and honest rating. I’ve probably eaten at more than fifty Chinese restaurants and given only two of them a 10.
It was a lazy Sunday afternoon and I was craving some new Chinese food. I found that they were close to my house and had a good looking menu. I ordered the early dinner special to go. I got the chicken with mixed vegetables. It was delicious! They didn’t skimp on the chicken and there was more than enough food for the price. The soup was perfectly cooked with the right sized portions chopped with it. I would definitely try this restaurant again!
Of you miss Grand China…. If you miss Grand China, you must try Hong Kong. Many of my favorite dishes from Grand China are still good at Hong Kong. Although they’re lacking some of my wife’s vegetarian favorites, the chicken with orange sauce is as good as ever, and I believe the beef with orange sauce is even better! At GC, the beef was in such small strips that it was cooked crispy all the way through (which was good!). Now the beef pieces are a little bigger, which allows them to be crispy on the outside, but wonderfully tender inside. Service can sometimes be a bit slow and staggered, but that is because they cook to order and bring each entree out as it is ready.
Great food and friendly service. $5 lunch menu. If you miss Grand China, you need to give this place a try.
