Not a fond dining experience. Mongolian Grille in the northwest (Portland/Vancouver) is my favorite restaurant in the known world, but VIP in Bakersfield pales by comparison. There are many buffet or all you can eat Asian restaurants in Bakersfield. VIP charges per plate. We won’t be going back.

I was very excited to try the VIP. I’m a big fan of the traditional Mongolian BBQ style and I was a big fan of Rachel’s Mandarin House that used to be east of Union Avenue until it closed about 20 years ago. When I went to the VIP, I was quite disappointed. The meat was tough, the vegetable selection was poor, and the sauces were bland. I was surprised to find that the raw meats were not kept cold enough and were available buffet-style where diners dish it themselves. (How much cross-contamination do you suppose takes place when someone uses the chicken tongs to grab some cabbage?) Rachel’s kept the meat COLD and behind the counter away from careless patrons. I suppose with some additional practice and a rearranging of the cooking area, VIP could improve, but based on my first visit, I’m not anxious to go back again.
