Our family had a great lunch. Fish tacos and tuna melt were excellent. Upstairs- outdoor patio was enjoyable. Service was excellet for a busy Sunday.
Disappointed During Birthday Dinner. I wanted to choose a new nice restaurant for my wife’s birthday so I figured I’d give this place a try.Order 2 oyster plates (3 each), ended up being best part of meal. The Seafood Sampler we ordered consisted of 2 crab cakes, 3 calimari sticks, and 2 fried shrimp, with mashed potatoes. I understand that all 3 of these items are fried, but that does not mean they should be lacking flavor, which I found to be the case. Both the crab cake and fried shrimp were topped off with a mango salsa (someone must be a Bobby Flay fan). For the entrees, wife ordered the Hawaiian Nut Opakapaka, which is supposed to have a macadamia nut crust. This too came with mango salsa. Unfortunately, there was sooooo much sauce on the fish you really couldn’t taste the fish. While our waitress was taking our order, I asked if it would be a bad idea of I ordered a steak or prime rib at this seafood restaurant. She immediately claimed their beef was top notch and delicious. So I ended up ordering a captain’s cut of the prime rib, medium rare, like I always order everywhere else prime rib is offered. The prime rib came out pink, but was as dry as leather. I had to cut everything into small pieces so I could get as much au jus sauce on it as possible, so sad.At the end of the meal, Elizabeth realized I didn’t like the prime rib because we asked for only one to go box, while my prime rib looked barely eaten. She offered to get me something else, but I was too full to take her up on her offer and didn’t feel like waiting around while my next extree was being prepared. Most restaurants I have been to will just automatically take an item off the bill if you mention you aren’t satisfied. This was my test to them. I did not ask to see what would happen. And sure enough when I got the bill, I was still charged for the prime rib. Not a big deal, but just makes my decision easy that I won’t be coming back here.
The perfect place to end a perfect day at the sea. Across the ferry from Balboa Island, the outside heated balcony provides a beautiful view. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The food and wine was great, and reasonably priced. With so many food choices nearby, the Newport Landing is a winner.
