  Madagascar Chocolate Silk Pie. I really wanted to love this. The cocoa flavor was overwhelming and the filling tasted ridiculously sweet. My favorite part of every pie, the crust, was tough and pretty flavorless. At $7, the price was too high, even though the slice was huge. Most of the piece consisted of foamy chocolate silk that had the texture of thick whipped cream. A Dora Pie, Berkeley’s newest bakery, is just a few steps shy of brilliance. The restaurant of sorts specializes in pie, pie, and more pie. Eclectic design and homey feel are trademarks of this little shop. Service is excellent, and the sweets smell tantalizing. Unfortunately, most of the pies appear burnt and a few of the fillings (namely the pumpkin and Meringue) seem poorly set. Appearance is one thing though, and taste is another. Each slice is large and filling, but far too sweet. The Madagascar Silk Pie in particular, a pile of smooth chocolate balanced on delicate crust, is nearly inedible past bite two due to the massive amount of sugar. Crust is, perhaps, the most important piece of any pie. A Dora Pie’s crusts tend to be tough and singed, not buttery and chewy or flaky and soft. Decent pie isn’t the only thing served here. Large cookies in standard flavors line the counter. Give them a try, they might be the best items in the store given the insane cost ($6+) of a slice.Rating: 4.7/10 tasteperiod.blogspot.com
