This slice is pretty spectacular. Whoever created Artichoke Pizza gets a high five from me and the food gods. The pizza consists of a soft, crispy, and buttery focaccia crust, a layer of succulent artichokes, and a heaping serving of cheese, all held together by a mysterious cream sauce. For a man who hates red sauce and has an arm’s length relationship with pesto, the alfredo-like glaze is a welcome change. Getting through a whole triangle of the muck can be a little difficult, though, as the cream soaks through the crust after a few minutes. When that happens, the focaccia basically disintegrates and the whole piece seems way richer. Basically, as long as you eat it fast, Artichoke’s Artichoke is one of the best slices in the city. If you have to let it sit, the story is a little different.14 Jan, 2015Artichoke Basille’s (Pizza). This place is the co-capital of college cuisine in Berkeley, alongside nearby Top Dog. Though more expensive per item than the hot dog joint, Artichoke’s wins with stunning portion sizes and bold flavors. A $4 deposit gets you one of a half dozen amazing choices, including the flagship Artichoke and the popular Crab slices. Each piece is about as big as your face (assuming you have a normal sized faced) and covered in a fistful of delicious toppings. The Artichoke has something close to a full artichoke on top, and Artichoke’s meatball pizza features a dozen of the namesake ingredient. Each slice is half cooked to start and finished to order, making for an altogether warm and gooey dining experience. Many other spots in Berkeley pump out delicious pies, but none of them offer the creamy texture and crispy foccacia-style crust Artichoke’s does. Seating here is minimal, and lines usually stretch around the corner, meaning to-go is the best type of order. Few places stay open past Artichoke’s 2am closing time, making the Durant corner store the top option for late night dining.Rating: 6.5/10 tasteperiod.blogspot.com
