My go-to pasta place in Berkeley. I always get the same custom order of pasta: Penne in Marinara sauce with chicken extra spicy! and it is my favorite. Every time I am here there is a huge line. This is a very popular place in Berkeley and has been awarded the best Italienrestaurant title for a few years.

Pollo Con Pesto. I love a good pesto. This is not a good pesto dish, but it’s edible. Individually, the components have obvious issues. The sauce is too thick and saturated with cream, and the noodles are a touch too overcooked to be tasty. Gypsy’s chicken is often burned and dry. Altogether, though, the three pieces work with one another, making for an enjoyable experience. The bowl is only $9 and comes with a piece of garlic squished on a slab of bread, so the value is there too. As much as I want to hate it, I plan on eating many more bowls of this goop in the coming months.15 Jan, 2015Gypsy’s Trattoria (Italian). I gave in and went to Gypsy’s for the first time last month. Since then, I’ve been back six times. I hate myself for it. It’s not that Gypsy’s is bad. If you squint and just shove it in your mouth, the food’s actually pretty good. Orders are made fresh, and people seem to love being there. The problem is, I’m Italian. I’m not supposed to enjoy cheap pastas and thickened sauces. No part of me should find their food edible. Gypsy’s has a certain appeal, though, that I can’t fight. If I didn’t know what good Italian was, I’d blindly love their bowls of delicious noodles. I’d race for a plate of Pollo con Pesto, a giant helping of slightly undercooked pasta lathered in powerful pesto. The thought of Gypsy’s undercooked spaghetti and tangy marinara would make me hungry. Imagining their burned, but handmade meatballs would make my mouth water. As it stands, I have a love-hate relationship with the place. I sneak in when crowds are low and my usually high standards are on break for the night. Someday, I might even learn to think of Gypsy’s as real Italian; for now, I’ll just appreciate them for what they are, a decent spot to fill late night cravings in a neighborhood with few other mediterranean options.Rating: 5.8/10 tasteperiod.blogspot.com

Good for pizza, not pasta. Great pizzzas and calzones, but the pasta (while there’s a good amount of options) leaves something to be desired. Good serving size for what you pay for, and quick and easy order time to eat inside or to go.
