Great atmosphere, great food. It’s definitely a nice place for a simple meal. When my dish came out it seemed at first too simple and possible inadequate in portion. However, by the time I was close to finishing my meal, I was stuffed. I had one of the lunch specials: plantains and chicken tamale. So good!
Casamiento, AKA pan fried black beans and rice, is possibly the most delicious kinda-vegetarian thing on the planet. It’s fattening, filling, rich, and flavorful. Basically, it consists of fresh black beans stewed with white rice. In a way, it compares well with a southern dirty rice dish crossed with that one time you dropped the takeout container from the taqueria down the street and got your sides all mixed up.27 Dec, 2014Sopa de Polla a la Parrilla. This chicken soup/chicken stew/bowl of liquid chicken salvation is one of the best I’ve had. The meat is tender, the broth is well seasoned, the vegetables are flavorful. The portion is large, the cooking time is short, and the price is right. Really, what more do you need?! Six positives! SIX! What are the negatives you ask? NONE! Six to zero. SIX AND OH. Get six bowls just to celebrate.27 Dec, 2014Platano (El Salvadorian/Latin American). Berkeley is not known for its Latin restaurants. Sure, five people outside of the East Bay have heard of Brazil Cafe. Another ten out there adore the nachos at Sol y Luna. No one knows about Platano. For some strange reason, I like it like that. This giant little restaurant on University Avenue serves some of the best Salvadorian food North of the border, and it’s empty (by Berkeley standards) almost every night. For as long as they retain enough business to keep the doors open, I’ll keep enjoying having the place all to myself. Platano’s Pupusas are probably the best I’ve ever had. Nearly a dozen types line their menu, at a cost of about $4 a piece. They come out piping hot and packed with fillings like pork and plantains. Though delicious, these babies aren’t even the highlight here; Platano’s chicken soup is my personal favorite. On a cold, foggy day, there’s nothing better. In a city without a single other decent Central American restaurant, Platano saves the day.Rating: 7.8/10 tasteperiod.blogspot.com
Great food!. I’ve never really considered University Avenue in downtown Berkeley to be a food destination, but the newest restaruants popping up on this street are a blessing. Platano is one of those. My favorite is the fried yucca and plantains, which I have ordered a couple times now. I’ve sampled many things on their menu, and have been happy with all of it, but I keep going back to the fried yucca and plantains.
