Burmese is a dark horse favorite for best global cuisine. It’s basically a lovable mix of Japanese, Chinese, and Indian flavors. Rangoon Super Stars does well to capture this fusion by offering an array of dishes like curried pork and wok fried noodles. Everything on the menu is stewed or tossed, yet clean and refined at the same time. Favorites include the Tea Leaf Salad, Village Catfish, and Lemon Grass Chicken. My personal choice at other Southeast Asian restaurants, some variation of stewed goat, isn’t offered here, which makes me sad. Rangoon Super Stars, you had one job, honestly. They do have lamb, though, which is genetically close enough to goat, I guess. The real downer here is how bad the lamb is. My substitute goat dish, Lamb Kebat, is an over spiced wok torched plate of tough and overcooked meat. Not even the Nan Gyi Dok, a delicious chicken curry noodle bowl, can make up it. For the lack of goat, and the lack of edible lamb, I docked this place a point. I’ll shut up about the goat now. Baaa. Service and atmosphere are two huge pluses, balancing out the overpriced mess of a goat-less menu. Even though they got my order wrong three times, they corrected it with a smile. Smiles earn points. Almost as many points as goat. Baaa. In summary? Rangoon Super Stars is a classy place that takes itself a little too seriously for a joint that serves traditionally poor village dishes. They do everything with leaves and noodles well. Everything with meat leaves a little to be desired. They have a severe lack of goat. Not baaad, for the third best Burmese place around, behind Kyusu and Burma Superstar.Rating: 6.8/10 tasteperiod.blogspot.com
