This place was the worst deli I’ve been to. The waiter was rude, food was cold, and drinks were not refilled. Not sure why this has a good rating.
I had breakfast here, which I was torn about. This looks like an amazing place for sandwiches, but I was blown away by the breakfast. I had corned beef hash with two poached eggs and it was amazing. Everything was super crispy, the eggs were poached beautifully and the toast was just right for dipping. All in, it was $15 for breakfast, which is a little pricey, but it was well worth the price.
It’s all about the No. 2 Pastrami Ruskie.. Its pretty much the best sandwich I’ve ever had. No lie! The sandwiches are great but the sides, such as the latkes are only OK.
Great Breakfast Spot. Whenever I am in the Bay Area I try to visit Saul’s for breakfast. The Leo is may favorite – lox, scrambled eggs and caramelized onions, pottos and a beagle. Wow, very tasty. They also have daily specials that are interesting and very good. Excellent deli for take out sandwiches on your way to the beach or park. Very prompt and friendly wait staff. They are excellent with small kids. We often take a couple of the grandkids with us for breakfast at Saul’s. Nice high ceiling atmosphere; NYC style deli with booths.
Chicken Livers and Onions. Best ever anywhere.15 Apr, 2011Chicken Livers and Onions. Oh my god! Whenever I’m in Berkeley and can swing it, Saul’s dish listed above is the best.
Oy Vey!. Had an order of the No. 9 Portabella Melt (~$9): grilled portabella mushroom, swiss, saurkraut, russian dressing on an Acme roll. Food was delicious, staff was friendly, and the ambiance was ideal (sidewalk seating).NOTE: The was a wait for a table indoors even towards the end of the lunch hour (2PM) so it might be best to plan ahead.
Excellent Sandwich and a Beer. My wife purchased a Groupon deal that Saul’s was running. for $42 bucks one gets three coupons food for a special sandwich and one of their beers on tap for 2. Quite the bargain as one gets 6 meals for the price of 3. Don’t forget to tip on the full amount! BTW, be careful if you use Groupon. They’ll send you email offers daily, at least.Saul’s isn’t in the class of the better NYC or LA Jewish delis but it’s not bad. The Matzo Ball soup is good but not great. However I really liked their potato latkes which were crisp and tasty served with sour cream & apple sauce. Now the special offer limits one to a choice of around 7 sandwiches but the variety is good. There’s a chicken, a couple of veggies, a pork and of course a Rueben type which is what I got. The sandwich was tasty though quite small compared to the other sandwiches I saw coming out of the kitchen. But that was ok. I don’t need monster sandwiches where I won’t have the will power to not eat in their entirety. The Pilsner I had w as good too. All in all, a pretty good meal for around $10.Saul’s has a take-out deli and bakery and also is the only source I’ve seen in the East Bay for Streit’s Matzo, the only brand worth buying in my estimation. I’ll definitely go back.
