Steve’s (Korean). I’m fond of hole-in-the-walls. A lot of my best meals have come from them. This place plays the part of one well. Steve’s sits in the dark in the back of a glorified alley. The walls are white and stained. Their floors are covered in linoleum. Menu items include nothing anywhere close to fancy (bbq pork, beef, chicken, and the like), and prices are close to affordable ($8-$10). Portions are simply gigantic. That’s where the positives (kinda) end. Vegetarian options, for starters, simply don’t exist here. Well, except for the couple items that are technically vegetarian (take my word for it and pretend they don’t exist). Most customers order BBQ Beef, or what most people would call Bulgogi. Like the rest of Steve’s meat options, the beef comes out in a heaping pile, half burned, half undercooked. A good portion of the pile tastes like grill. Their pork and short ribs don’t look much better. Sides aren’t a thing either, apparently, meaning a meal at Steve’s is a carnivorous carnival. Throw in the impatient and unhelpful service, and you have the perfect recipe for a failing restaurant. Late night might be a decent time to eat here, when you’re too tired to notice the appearance and couldn’t care less about quality, but the place closes at 11 now, so that’s not even an option. Can’t Go Wrong!. Had an order of the Bi Bimbap (~$7): rice & raw vegetables (lettuce, carrot, cucumber, radish, and zucchini) topped with egg and Kimchi. Food was delicious, staff was quick, and the ambiance is like an oasis (metaphorically, not literally).NOTE: The egg is prepared on a grill which is used for other orders as well; one could ask for the egg to be withheld were it to be a concern.
