Not your usual Austrian food. Berni Mairinger, the Austrian chef and owner, really deserves a thumbs up with his great little restaurant in a city saturated with restaurants. Austrian food doesn’t necessarily excite me, and I am Austrian, but Berni gives it all a little kick (which it needs, in my view). So, your Schnitzel is not just a huge bit of meat dripping fat over the edge of your plate – here it is a fine cut of meat fried to perfection and beautifully presented on a bed of light potato salad. So is your Szegediner Gyulas – not heavy with pork, but Bernie gives it a twist and prepares it with fish – great idea. We tried lots of dishes and none disappointed. All of them come with a fine little twist to make a normally heavy cuisine light and refreshing. A very nice selection of Austrian wines helps too:)) Well done!

What a Disappointment!. We were very much looking forward to trying BierBeisl for the first time, making a point of taking my wife’s 87-year old Austrian mother as a special treat. Despite having made our reservation ten-plus days in advance, when we arrived the hostess attempted to seat us at high stools by the kitchen as opposed to one of the empty tables for four that were available. When we pointed out that an 87-year old who was unsteady on her feet at best could hardly be expected to perch on a stool, we were told they preferred to keep the tables available for parties of four, while there were only three of us. To put it mildly, this was inexcusably rude and unwelcoming. The good news, however, was that we had a delightful dinner at Chaya Brasserie and will never set foot at BierBeisl again.
