A totally weird experience. Had to wait about half an hour for a table. Ordered drinks while we waited but they never came. Seated at our table around 12:45. When we ordered half the menu was already unavailable. Sushi that arrived had barely packed rice which collapsed the instant you touched it. Crab and lobster rolls both tasted of cooked tuna. The wait staff removed my plate 4 times during our 30 minute stay, each time because they thought I had finished. This meant they obviously had no idea about the food we had ordered nor the food we had left to come. On one occasion my plate was removed, I asked for a replacement which came and 30 seconds later another waiter tried to remove it again. Drinks were removed and refilled before they were even half finished. I really have no idea why this place is so popular. It is seriously awful. Avoid!
Oh, Sugarfish! Sugarfish is definitely one of the most delicious and amazing restaurants to experience in Los Angeles! Although it may be pricey, I strongly believe it is the cheapest BEST quality sushi you will get anywhere in LA. This sushi place is serving up traditional sushi techniques with fresh fish and an addictive taste that has me coming back for more! They have a lot of choices and different fish. They have a specific way to prepare and give out the sushi which makes this place pretty unique. Slowly, Sugarfish is expanding, opening many new restaurants around town. They also have another restaurant called Kazu Nori that focuses on mostly hand rolls in Downtown. At Sugarfish, the seaweed and rice are HOT while the fish is cold. These two temperatures give my palette an interesting kick, and surprisingly it is paired perfectly together! The fish melts in your mouth and you can tell this is TOP of the line fish. One would say it is a little pricey, but you are paying for the quality, and it isnt as bad in difference to Nobu or Katsuya. As well as the uniqueness of hot rice and cold fish, they also do not give any additional sauces and dont recommend putting soy sauce on some of the fish, because every fish has its own unique component added to it, for example, some lemon or ponzu. This can interrupt with the taste. They have individual items you can order and then they have their fix orders, the Trust Me, the Trust me Lite and the Nosawa Trust Me. The lunch, dinner and take out menus of these are all different. At dinner the price is a little higher and the take out sushi options dont contain some of the same fish if you eat in at the restaurant, so it all varies.I tried the Nozawa Trust Me with one other person, this was $40.00. PS. heres a secret, at lunch time before 3:30PM it is $35.00, however, not all the same fish are in the lunch and it may be an item or two less. The Nozawa Trust Me comes with Organic Edamame, Tuna Sashimi, Albacore Sushi (2-pc), Salmon Sushi (2-pc), Yellowtail Sushi (2-pc), Halibut Sushi (2-pc), Snapper Sushi (2-pc), Toro Hand Roll, Blue Crab Hand Roll, Daily Special (2-pc). The daily special the night I went was sweet shrimp. In addition to this, we also got a 8 piece roll, half toro and half yellowtail, this was $9.25.When you get it to go, it comes in an adorable bento box, something I continuously pick up because sometimes waiting to sit at a table takes a while! The to go boxes are adorable and I love it! You may not get the hot fish with cold sushi feel but the fish is still fresh and melts in your mouth. I normally order a Trust Me to go or when I dont decide to share, in the restaurant, I will also get the Trust Me. When you eat it there, it comes in waves and phases, giving you fresh fish and hot rice and seaweed, ALWAYS. The Edamame and the Tuna Sashimi come out first. The Tuna Sashimi was a little small, but worth it within this $40.00 package. It came with about 6 pieces of Sashimi and underneath was a delicious ponzu sauce and green onions to garnish.Next came the Snapper, Salmon and Albacore sushi. The Snapper had a fishy taste but a lemon kick which allowed the fishy taste to decrease a little. The Salmon melted in my mouth like butter with roasted sesame seeds coating the fish. And the Albacore Roll was not supposed to be dipped in soy sauce because it already had its own ponzu sauce and this was exquisite! So far into my meal, I was loving it.Next came the Halibut and Yellowtail. These two fish options were the most velvety ones of the bunch, and they melted in my mouth. The Sweet Shrimp was not my favorite but it was still really tasty. The consistency was a little thick and slimy in my mouth but other than that, the taste was delicious. The warm rice gave all these items a major kick of flavor, as well as the extra components on each of the fish to bring out its flavors. The Blue Crab and Toro Handrolls were great as well! In the to go boxes, these come as cut rolls. The seaweed and rice was hot! and the crab and toro were both marinated. The toro and the blue crab were mushy and delicious. The Tuna and Yellowtail rolls were delicious as well, and after this meal, I was good and full! Tip is already included as well. Another thing is that they do not take reservations and it is normally really busy, so I suggest going to a Sugarfish location that has something to do around it, so you can walk around. I went to the Beverly Hills location and I walked around some shops and the Montage Hotel across the way. This place continues to mark my monthly, sometimes weekly, agenda. I go here so much! instagram.com
Having heard many good things about Sugarfish, when I arrived in Los Angeles, I made sure to myself that I would visit this place before I leave. And surely enough the wait was well worth the effort. The place is cozy and the seating can be a little too close for comfort to other diners but that’s all good. My girlfriend and I had the Nozawa Trust Me’s as it was recommended to us by our server. The concept I liked the most about Sugarfish is its simplicity. No extra soy sauce when not needed. Every piece of fish went into my mouth was pure Umami heaven. Cool fish situated on top of proper temperature rice is simply stunning. Now if only every other place I ate at could do this. My favourite was the simple maki handroll cut in half. Nori, rice and fatty melt in your mouth toro with a dab of soy sauce? I would have ordered at least 2-3 more of those. For such a simple yet delightful sushi experience, $35 goes a long way for a satisfied belly. If I lived in LA I would attempt to go every day.
Good fish served with arrogant nonchalance to a room of brats texting each other, We were hustled out by the otherwise innattentive staff which was fine with me
