Lousey Burrito. Al and Bea’s was a major disappointment.I read all the raves about their green chile burrito, so I decided to try the place tonight. There’s no off street parking, nor indoor dining. And it was a cold evening tonight. The burrito itself was quite small. And absolutely nothing special. I was told the green chile burrito had no meat at all. Which was a major surprise because most Mexican restaurants refer to Green Chile as pork. The cashier suggested I try their combo which did have meat.I don’t think it was pork. It looked liked canned beef. Fine strips of beef that they export from South America. An excellent product I sometimes enjoy over white rice. But not something I wanted in my burrito. The taquitos looked like typical fast food flautas. Frozen and mass produced. Nothing special to recommend them.
50’s Style Burritos. I came, I tried, I liked. This is a burrito from the 1950’s but better. I wouldn’t make a special trip from afar to the tiny Boyle Heights stand but the food does hit the spot. Simple, old-fashioned, tasty and authentic with your choice of ingredients. Wash it down with some horchata.
I recommend you go to Al & Beas, order a green chile burrito with meat. Add to that a fried taco with guac and/or taquitos with guac and cheese. Or if your feeling gutsy, get the four finger dog with an order of fried jalapeos. Guilty pleasure.
