Seriously one of the most amazing little finds ever! We were tossing up between three Mexican places, but thank goodness we chose this place! The negro mole was incredible – so smooth and flavoursome. The service was attentive yet not intrusive. I wish we could eat here all the time!
I have been to Monte Alban once and it was my first and last time there. I was very excited about trying but had a horrible experience. We were seated and served chips and salsa, we finished the chips after 25 mins. waited 28 more minutes but no one came to even take our order for drinks we were very upset and ended up walking out after waiting for an hour
My fave is the SHRIMP DIABLO. I get it once a week! I’m addicted! Chips are super yummy too.
Westside Clayudas. Monte Alban serves the best clayudas (basically Oaxacan pizzas) on the Westside. I prefer them with chorizo over chicken as a topping, and I like having extra avocado as well. They are crisp, light, and tasty, and a single clayuda is plenty for two people. Monte Alban’s moles are good and are richer and a little less sweet from comparable places such as Guelaguetza. Their desserts look great, but I’ve always ended up to full to try one.
Decent Oaxacan. Went to monte alban this weekend since i have heard so many great things about the oaxacan joint. i was so excited when i set foot in as the scents wafting in the restaurant was divine and the host/server was very kind and offered up suggestions on what to order. however, i think i made a boo-boo in ordering because i was underwhelmed by the food. i should’ve gotten a mole dish as i originally planned, but i was thinking with my eyes and the carnes monte alban combo plate looked so damn good on the menu….not to mention it sounded like it contained a lot more food. hehehe!as we were waiting for the entrees, my friend and i munched away on the warm chips and salsa. the chips were delicious but the salsa was running and kinda bland to me…….i like my salsa hot hot hot!!!when my entree came, the food smelled wonderful. the combo consisted of a thin and wide strip of marinated beef and a strip of thin pork. in addition, there was a cactus salad, black beans and rice on the side.onto the food……the beef was cooked way too long and was a bit tough. however, the meat was infused with flavor so that somewhat offset the dryness. the beef was basically flavor infused beef jerky, lol. woe be the cow ift came off of. on the other hand, the pork was pretty juicy in the center but the pieces near the sides were quite dry. once again the redeeming quality was the marinade as the meat was packed with flavor. i tried the cactus salad and couldn’t get past one forkful, i guess cactus salad is an acquired taste. the beans were yums, and i used the chips to scoop it all up. as for the rice, it was a standard fluffy white rice and did not have much flavor to it. but i guess that was the point as the rice did not detract from the flavor in the meat.the service was good and our waitress was full of smiles. =)i dunno. perhaps i was overhyped by all the reviews cause i left scratching my head. since monte alban is close by to me, i vow to go back again and try the mole or the goat stew in an attempt to get my socks rocked.
Never fails.. This place never disappoints. The food is consistently good, service is always pleasant. The Tacos Enchilados with black Mole is my favorite dish. THUMBS UP!
So you just parked in a strip mall off Santa Monica Blvd and stepped into a Oaxacan family dinner party… try the mole! Actually, it’s really all you can try here, but in countless colors and shapes that make you realize you really are a gringo after all.
