Ramen Hood is the creation from Top Chef winner Ilan Hall. Situated within the Grand Central Markets this bowl of ramen is worth making a trek to.Not being a local & wanting to explore DTLA & having a craving for ramen what a better fit but to head down to these markets. Mind you Grand Central Markets is a melting pot of cuisines & if you want to go on a culinary adventure, I recommend coming here. Just make sure you have an empty stomach & bring an extra one if you could. Now back to the ramen, I ordered the garlic ramen (OG ramen). This place is 100% vegan & the broth is made out of sunflower seeds. I did not imagine something with so much depth of flavour with such a thick & creamy consistency could come out from such a humble thing! Think of a vegan version of tonkatsu ramen with a thick consistency but minus the sometimes overpowering flavour that is the pork bones normally associated with this type of broth. The ramen is also cooked with just enough chewiness & slightly different in appearance to normal ramen as it is hand made. The oyster mushroom is just so meaty that you actually forget it is a vegetable & imho there is an abundance of spring onions (otherwise know as scallions here?) & the bean sprouts. It also has the most cutest bit of bok choy (wish there was more of this). This is my first time trying a vegan ramen & most likely never to come across is back home but if I do I doubt it would come close to this! You order at the side counter, but my tip is to try wait & nab a table at the bar to eat your ramen in front of the chefs cooking/preparing the meals. I unfortunately could not find one so we opted for my order to be takeaway & found a seat to eat elsewhere (which I do not recommend doing – just wait for a seat believe me it would probably be a better experience). Mind you takeaway was relatively fast & service was very friendly.Overall, a very understated bowl of ramen which has got me still thinking about how awesome it was. A must try in my opinion!Apologies for the blurry pics again….must take up lessons lol
