Had a late lunch here while in town for a concert at the Microsoft Theater. A friend who works at a hotel across the street recommended it and joined us. The service was great, prompt, and helpful. We had 2 appetizers, 3 main courses, and 2 glasses of wine and a soft drink. All were amazing! Just over $100.00 dollars for the 3 of us plus tip.
Triple 8 China Bar & Grill occupies a corner site on Olympic Boulevard in Dowtown LA and was discovered when we had our usual nightly forage for food. Our hungry stomachs craving for some late night dim sum did the happy dance when we found out they were open until 2am. We can’t eat at a Chinese Restaurant without ordering some Xiao Long Bao now can we? This is something which impresses on simple craftsmanship. Soupy dumplings are genius, the fillings of pork made with a stock which is jellied when cold but which, when heated, turns them into pouches of hot broth around the filling. One has to be careful since more often than not they stick to the greaseproof paper so that, as you lift them away, the shell tears, losing the prized soup. These hold together perfectly and deliver up a broth infused with handfuls of fresh ginger. Its one of those dishes that makes you feel like a better person simply for having the smarts to eat it. We are also fans of the Shrimp and Pork Siu Mai with black mushroom and tobiko (fish eggs) and the Shrimp and Scallop Siu Mai, which were all pleasant. For appetizers, we indulged in their Minced Chicken Lettuce Wraps and enjoyed greatly. The main dishes arrived, the Korean style spare ribs and Young Chow Fried Rice. The ribs were good, meaty and well seasoned, while the rice was fragrant and was heaping with shrimp, beef, pork and vegetables. Serious about chinese food in a modern setup during midnight? Then this place is for you.

Before hitting the Clippers game in downtown LA we literally stumbled across Triple 8 and glad we did! The food was full of favour and to be honest a lot better than back home in NZ. The Duck with pancakes are always going to be hit, chicken dumplings bursting with flavour and the out of this world slightly crispy, slightly soft chicken wings were my fav.Get here between 5&7pm most dishes are $7 (excluding the duck) and cocktails are $6 (really great drinks)
